I Have an IUD and Is It Possible to Be Prego??

I have the Merena IUD - I have had it in since the birth of my son in October 2009. (I had one in previously before we tried for my son) I love it and I have never questioned it, but I am having some symptoms of being prego. I did take a store bought test and it came back negative. The last time my husband and I had sex was about a month and half ago (Seriously lacking energy).

Has anyone gotten pregnant while having an IUD?? If so what happened?

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I hate to say it but yes. Well, besides the fact that no birth control is 100% effective...I have 3 women I know personally who have become pregnant on IUDs. And I have heard from several other women that they know of someone who has become pg on an IUD. Good luck!!!!

If the IUD slips too far down or becomes mildly imbedded in the folds of the area, you can get pregnant. Or at least you could years ago. If you have string attached, see if it is longer than usual.

Possible, yes. Probable, no. The idea of the IUD you have is to keep the lining so thin that an egg couldn't implant if you did happen to concieve. There are a few other things it does that help to keep you from concieving, but like another poster said, nothing is 100%.

I think its worth bringing up to your doctor. I think its unlikely that you're pregnant, but its worth it to go in just to find out that its still in correctly.

If that last time you had sex was a month and a half ago, a pregnancy test should definitely be coming back positive by now. An IUD wouldn't mess with the hormone pregnancy tests detect.

I think you're probably not pregnant but maybe just hormonally a bit off this month. I have the Mirena, too. I have had a couple of months over the past few years where I've felt tired and have had really tender breasts and wondered if I might be pregnant... and I hadn't even had sex! Call your doctor to be sure but I doubt you're pregnant.

You should contact your doctor immediately to get a blood test done and to discuss your risks and options if you are in fact pregnant. My girlfriend got pregnant 7 months after having the Mirena IUD put in and it was seriously awful for her - she ended up having a miscarriage and a severe infection resulting from the doctor removing the IUD. In all reality, however, the odds are on your side of not being pregnant - you may be experiencing a hormonal fluctuation, but just to err on the side of caution, I'd contact your healthcare provider. Good Luck!

My daughter had a tubal pregnancy while using an IUD. When the doctor checked her he couldn't find the IUD and thought it had migrated. The string was too short for my daughter to feel it. I don't know the final word on what happened to it.

I too suggest that you see your doctor to just be sure. It is unlikely that you're pregnant. The odds against it are good.

I know many people who have gotten pregnant with the mirena. You need to find out ASAP cuz if you are that IUD needs to come out now.

You may not be prego but could be having a reaction to the IUD. Talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are having. Your body might need a small vacation from the IUD, of course you will need alternative birthcontrol.
Having no energy , tender breasts , and some pelvic discomfort are a few signs that you may be having a reaction..it is worth checking out..YOU ARE WORTH IT!!--peace and love my sister

SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

basically, there should be no way you can get pregnant with the IUD; but if you do, it is HIGHLY likely that it could be eptopic (implanted in the fallopian tubes and misc and not the uterus, which can cause them to burst, causing infertility, hemorage, and even death)

though this risk is RARE (like i said, there should be NO WAY you could be pregnant) there is a chance. so go to your doctor. chances are its just the way the IUD is adjusting to your body and causing different symptoms. i wouldnt worry but please address your concerns with your doctor so that he or she can help you figure it out. :) :)

and if you arent happy with what your doc tells you, get a second opinion from another doctor! :)

I've only known 3 women who have used the IUD before. And 2 of them got pregnant while on it and delivered healthy babies. It could just be a side effect of the IUD, though. Go talk to your doctor and get a blood test to make sure, because if you are pregnant, you'll want that taken out as soon as possible.

I had an IUD and constantly had pregnancy symptoms but always had negative tests. I had the IUD removed and became pregnant either just before or just after it was removed. That pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. I have a friend who also had Mirena and she got pregnant. The baby was found to have no heartbeat at her 20 week ultrasound. Doctors are unsure if either pregnancy loss was related to Mirena but my friend was told that an IUD can cause complications with pregnancy and delivery and I have heard others complain that post IUD removal they seem to have trouble conceiving.

I have the Mirena as well and I bought a multi pack of prego tests because I kept thinking the same thing..bloating, my stomach looks prego/fat up top near the rib cage..never had fat there before. I also have cravings and cramping like I did when I was prego..don't waste your $$ on any more tests because it is just a side effect. My breasts also get very enlarged and swollen. I am thinking about getting it removed.

E.,

The odds of being pregnant are very, very unlikely, about the same as if you had your tubes tied. My friend did manage to get pregnant with an IUD still in properly, had it removed and the baby was fine. But having an IUD in when your pregnant is very dangerous, so if you really think you are pregnant, you need to get into a doctor and get it out right away.

Good luck,
S.

Yes it is possible but my PMS symptoms are pregnancy symptoms. Nausea , cramping, bloated, gassy, breast tenderness, etc.
With it being 6 weeks ago the last time you had sex , the test would have been positive.

Just an FYI, when I was on Mirena, I thought I was pregnant 3 times in about 8 months. Heck, I thought I was pregnant half the time. If I wasn't bleeding lightly, I was having sore breasts and nausea. I think I took 8 pregnancy tests in that 8 months. It made me crazy and to feel pregnant all the time so I had mine taken out. Besides that, I got two vaginal bacteriosis infections while on Mirena (which I'd never had before or have had since).

Just so you know, you aren't the only one who's had issues with Mirena! I wish I could have been one of the women it worked perfectly for.
