Hi Mom's we bought a tension gate for our daughters doorway when we put it up it took the paint off of the door jam. It was a really hot day and our air conditioner was broken so I don't know if it was a one time thing or if it will keep happening. I would like to get 2 more to block off the bottom of the stairs but was wondering if any mom's had good advice on tension gates that don't take paint off the walls.

you'll want a gate that screws into the wall for the top of the stairs, the pressure ones aren't fully safe for little ones.

I had a tension gate for my first 3. I had to put it as tight as possible becaues one of my girls would climb it. The only time we had an issue was when my landlord decided to "fix" the varnish on a doorjamb and used really old stuff. If it was really humid, that is probably what caused the problem.
If you are concerned about possible future recurence, you can put a piece of coarse material as a buffer between the wall and the rubber piece on the gate. I rembered we used a rough piece of cordoroy or maybe it was a piece of upholstery on the one doorway.

Hi P.!

We too had the problem with the tension gates and it is not due to the weather. What we did after we noticed it was to cut a small pc of material and stick it between the rubber & the wall... this seemed to help.
If you are still looking to purchase 2 tension gates, I have 2 that I am selling.. they are the ones with the foot petal that you step on to open(made by The First Years). We used them at the top & bottom of our steps about 1 1/2yrs ago. They are still like new. If you interested...shoot me an email at ____@____.com. I hope to be posting them soon on Craigs List.

Thanks,
C.

Sounds like it might have been a one time thing. I've never had problems.
