Need Baby Gate - Top Stairs - Wall on One Side & 5Inch Dry Wall Section on Other

I am looking for recommendations for a top the stair gate that can be mounted (preferrably, without drilling into walls). The bannister ( if I may call it) is a dry wall section that is about 5 inchs wide and about 35 inchs high. This is a long section that goes all the way across.

So What Happened?

Thanks every one. I did end up with a wall mounted gate - had to drill a few holes. I got it from HomeDepot.

I had the same issue too- I didn't want to drill into the wall. But then when I thought about it, the tension-mounted gates could possibly just pop out of place if someone fell into it, or heaven forbid, someone tried to climb over it (we have one at the bottom of the stairs and I could see how it could slip or give out). Wall-mounted gates are secure. I figured a little bit of trouble fixing the holes after we take the gate down is a lot better than taking a chance on safety!

We have a Retract-A-Gate at the top of our stairs and LOVE it.
Check out the website:
www.retractagate.com

It does have to be mounted to the wall, but it reoils nicely isn't as obnoxious as every other gate you'll find. It IS JPMA certified for top of stairs use. It'll support up to 200lbs and can be mounted to a bannister. It can also be moved all over the house, as long as you have brackets in other places.

I can't recommend a better gate!

N.,
Sounds like you should be able to use pressure mounted on both sides if its a drywall bannister. I have a regular wood banninster and wall on mine and I took a 1" deep x 3" wide piece of wood the height of the bannister and got large tywrap strips and mounted the wood to the bannister so I wouldn't have to drill into the wood and the other side of the gate is pressure mounted to the wall. The gate I got was from Meijer.com and its wood and very pretty however I'm sure you could find cheaper.

I had the same issue with a banister on one side and drywall on the other side. I purchased a gate at babies r us for about 75.00 that is iron and pressure mounted with a walk through gate in the middle that swings open. This pressure mounting is much stronger and differnt than a regular pressure mounted gate. You actually adjust the tension with a wrench that is provided. So far so good for us. We just swing open the gate in the middle and the sides stay put...you dont have to take the gate on and off. Also, it looks pretty nice too. The brand of gate is Summer I believe. Check any babies r us and they will have it. Hope this helps.

We have a gate at the top of our stairs that we got a Babies R Us and it is made specifically for the top of the stairs. It is mounted to the wall. I was hesitant to dril into the wall, but thought better of it when my daughter was hanging on the gate that we used to keep her in the family room (not on stairs).Even though it will have to be fixed when you are done using the gate, it really is safer to mount gates to the wall when they are by the stairs.

the safest thing for the top of the stairs is to mount it to the wall & bannister. Pressure mount gates are very unreliable. Since it is drywall it will be super easy to repair it when you are done with gates. A little spackle and some paint and you won't be able to tell it was even there. You can buy gates that the hardware stays in tact in the wall and the gate slips out from the top. This way if you are in between babies or if you are having a party where you need it to not be there, you can simply slip it off and then easily put it back up. You can buy those gates(wood that can be stained or painted to match your decor) at leaps and bounds.com Good luck.

I have a similar situation, only mine is like the previous poster's - I have dry wall on one side and a bannister on the other. I'll have to check the babies R us Web site - but I'm wondering if you could explain more clearly how you attached the piece of would - what are ty strips and how did they hold the wood in place?
