I found Spot Shot works great on old stains. but someone else had a good point... depending on where you are renting from, and how long you you have lived there - you might want to talk to the landlord. one of the rentals we lived at automatically replaced the carpet because it was over 2 years old when we moved out - we didn't even have to clean the carpet since they were just going to toss it anyway.

A co-worker just tried this on an extremely large black stain and it worked. Baking soda and vinegar. Spray the area with vinegar and sprinkle baking soda over the stain, let it soak for a bit and scrub with a brush. You can spray more vinegar and sprinkly more baking soda and let stay. The baking soda somehow soaks up the stain. Then vaccum and suprise.

I agree with Brenda Sol-U Mel. It even gets our red wine and permanent marker. Not only does it really work it is non- Toxic and it is safe to use around the kids. It is a must have around the house.
Good Luck. And let me know if you want to know were to get some!

Oxy Clean makes a carpet cleaner spray that we bought at Costco though I'm sure I've seen it elsewhere. It's gotten out a bunch of different stains out of the beige carpet we once had (we just replaced it with something darker). My brother and SIL have it as well and swear by it. They are rather anal about their almost white carpet.

I've been using the Woolite Rug Stick in the high-traffic areas of my home and it works pretty well. However, I use it fairly regularly so I'm not sure it would work on set-in stains (I think it's mostly for plain old dirt that's been ground in). Here's something to consider: when we moved out of our last place, we would have paid probably $100-$150 for the carpet cleaning. Instead, per agreement with the landlord, he deducted $100 and did it himself. Now he was an exceptionally agreeable landlord with whom we had a very good relationship, and we were very honest about the spots (the movers caused them on the very day we moved in...go figure). If you have a pretty good relationship with your landlord, you may just want to talk to him/her and see what they usually do or if you can arrange something similar. S/he can probably get the cleaning for a better price, and then if anything goes wrong with the cleaning it's not on your head.

My response is a little late, but maybe it will be of use. I've had great luck using OxiClean powder on my stains. It's gotten out the shadowy "stains" left from beer and milk that were already cleaned with regular carpet cleaner and it's gotten out orange and red candy stains. I mixed some with warm water and poured on the stains and let sit for 30 minutes and blot up with a clean rag. Hope this helps.

Is the stain shallow? If so you can try gently shaving the carpet. I know this sounds weird, but this has kept me from paying some additional charges. Good luck!

The best thing that has worked for me is Melaleuca's Sol-U-Mel. I had some sort of grease stain in my carpet that had been there for years and I used a 50% solution of the sol-u-mel and it took it right out.

The only thing is you can't get it at a store. You have to buy it from Melaleuca. There are lots of reps around here. I'm sure as soon as someone sees that I made this post you will get people soliciting you to talk to them about their products. But it does work.

I was introduced to a product by my brother when he worked in child care. It's called Folex, you can find it at Albertsons, CVS, sometimes Target. I'm telling you, this stuff is amazing! You just spray it on the stain, agitate it a bit with a scrub brush or even your fingers and then blot dry.... your stain is gone! It effortlessly got out heavy stains that my steam cleaner wouldn't even budge. I've never had a problem with color fading problems in the carpet either when it's dry and the stain doesn't come back later either.

Each and every time I have had to clean set-in stains before moving, I have used the products from the Rug Doctor. THey have a solution you can buy for just for set-in stains and can be used in any carpet cleaner. (We lived in one apartment for 5 years -so who know how long it was there), but this stuff got it out.

Call a professional. You will probably be able to have the carpets cleaned for about $100 and they will know how to do it. You could really mess things up if you try it yourself (speaking from experience!!)

We like Woolite Oxy carpet spray. I have only found it at Target, only about $3.
If that fails I turn to the real Oxy clean, and make a paste of it with hot water and soak it on there, but you sometimes have to be careful of the color changing. We removed OLD blood off carpet this way and all was good.

If it's not too late to respond, we've found Quick-n-Brite really helpful. When we were renting it even took bicycle grease (the black stuff) out of a light grey carpet. Honestly, my friends think I'mm a walking infomercial for this stuff. I've been using it my entire married life (15 yrs.). It can be found at www.quicknbrite.com. It takes out pet, berry, chocolate, and many other stains. It's biodegradable (I believe it's made from sea kelp) and not harmful at all. I'm very sensitive to stuff like that. I can use it around my children. The best part; with this stuff, once you get the stain out IT DOES NOT COME BACK (at least in carpet!). Good luck and Happy New Year.

If I can get marker stains (permanent marker stains) and nail polish stains, grape juice out of my brown carpet then this should work for you as well.

Although alot of elbow grease was also applied as well.

Take some vinegar 1-2 tbsp and some hot water along with some mild detergent. Completely saturate it then start dabbing away and rubbing with the solution.

By the way we have beige carpet!

That should do the trick.

If it can take out those stains from my sweet 2 year old then its worth a try.
