Seeking Moms' Help with Finding a High School "Private School" for My ADHD Son

I have a son who is ADHD and currently attends the Shelton School in Dallas (7th grade). Shelton specializes in children with ADHD and other learning differences. He has been at Shelton since 3rd grade, and it was the best thing that ever happened to our family. I can not say enough about the school and how much it changed his life. Shelton tries to get children with learning difference to a point in which they can be mainstreamed back into a regular school. They believe my son will be at that point by 9th grade. I am scared to death about this - as my previous experience with public school was a nightmare - my sons self esteem was terrible. I am looking into Prestonwood Christian Academy and Legacy Christian Academy, as I live in the Frisco area and would also like him in a Christian environment. Does anyone have any experience with either of these schools and an ADHD child? I am hoping to find another private school that can work with an ADHD child even if they do not specialize in that area. Shelton seems to think we are ready, but I am scared to death based on past experience. One more thing.. it is important to us that the school also not be too small, as my son loves sports. Since football and track are areas he excels (which is very important when someone doesn't always excel in other areas) I don't want him to miss out on participating. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Check out Dallas Lutheran School, just south of Forest Lane and east of 75. I do not know their position on ADHD, but they are very accepting, though strict. It is a college prep school. I moved my son there from a very small private school so he could participate in team sports, and we have been very happy with it. Even though my son had past behavioral problems, they were willing to give him a chance, and so far, so good. It is quite a commute, but we have managed it easier than you would think.

HI... I actually went to Shelton YEARS ago actually in 1986-87.(they did not have high school there then) I went ot a public high school after that and went from only 18 kids in my grade to over 500 kids and it blew me away and i hated it and did not do well at all. My husband went to Fairhill and I have heard good things about Winston but not sure why shelton wont let you stay if you want to stay...

I would have preferred a smaller private school but I only know those 3.

PS I have a son with SEVERE adhd and other issues and I would LOVE to have him there but we live too far for one and could not afford it.

Good luck

Good morning, A.,
I don't have any school advice for you, since our 3 youngest all attended Allen High School and had a great experience there, lots of music, sports & activities.
I do urge you to contact Ditt Welch at the Oxygen Sciences Wellness Center in Dallas (near Preston & 635) ###-###-#### and ask about their neurofeedback treatment for ADHD. This has totally revolutionized our lives and we are on no pills or drugs anymore. This would benefit your son and your family immensely and help him tackle high school and the adult world with confidence.
It's worth a call and an assessment.
Good luck!

Hi A.,

My son went to Shelton from preschool thru eighth grade. He is at Bishop Lynch High School now, and he is doing great. He is dyslexic and ADD. Bishop Lynch is a catholic school located in east Dallas. We are Baptist and live in north Plano, but the school is great and works for us. My son has to ride a bus a to school everyday, but he loves socializing on the bus. If Shelton says your son is ready to move on trust them. They know what they are talking about. Shelton will give you a list of school they think your son will be successful at. Many of my son's friends moved to new schools this year such as Bisphop Lynch, Parish, Jesuit, John Paul II, and Arts Magnet School. Sorry, I don't know of anyone who went to Prestonwood or Legacy. Good luck with your search and try not to worry.

Even if the private school is small, you can inquire with the Frisco/North Dallas youth sports programs for your son.

Good luck.
