Seeking Advice on Infant Formula Brands

Can anyone recommend an infant formula that causes less gas pains. We have tried Enfamil which caused gas pains and audible tummy gurgling and crying all day and frequently during the night. We are now on the Target brand of Enfamil which causes less of the same symptoms but still causes significant discomfort. Has anyone tried a formula that seems to cause less gas?

What can I do next?

I found that Gentlease is a good for the gas but the best thing I've found is to use the Mylicon(or generic brand) drops in the bottle. It has been a life saver for us.

K.,
We have a 10 month old baby girl and I've used Baby's Only Organin dairy based formula since she was born. She has never had a problem with it, ever. The only draw back is that it's a little hard to find, Whole Foods carries it and Mother's does as well. The other is that it costs a bit more than the popular brands. I love it because it's organic and it doesn't have that terrible formula smell the others do. She is a happy healthy baby.

I had same problems with DS, who is now 3 yo, and used Nutramagen and now having same problem with DD and have her on Alimentum. I tried the Nutramagen with DD but she didn't like it. She's 8 months old now and still gets really gassy and also has reflux (on meds for it now) She still wakes up about 2 times a night because of gas & reflux so I'm hoping she will grow out of it soon. Both worked but both babies were still gassy but not as bad as before.
I also had a very low milk supply and eventually had to switch completely to formula with both.

Hi K.,

I started using Similac when my son was 5 months old. It worked for him and he was a really gassy newborn (I exclusively breast-fed the first 5 months) and the formula actually HELPED his gas/fussiness.

It is a bit more expensive than store brands, but I loved it and started using the toddler (9-24 month formula a few months ago).

Good luck and congrats on continuing to breast-feed (even part-time)...I wish I had gone longer myself.

:)

I had a preemie and I used Enfamil Prosobee and when u get to the ceral age if u have problems try to mix formula with original rice dream (at trader joes or other health food stores) first. My pediatrician told me that 7 years ago and it worked for all of my friends that had problems also! (My mother also had me do a old costa rican trick too! Boil McCormick Anise seeds strain and reserve the liquid, when completely cool (room temp) put a tablespoon in the bottle and have your baby drink that, it makes the gas come out for some strange reason!!!!!!!)

Hi K. -

I know that every baby is different, but our pediatrician recommended the Enfamil Prosobee (blue can). It was the third formula we'd tried & seemed to do the trick. It's a soy-based formula, which seemed to settle better for my baby girl. I was doing the same thing you are w/ the breast milk. I also had a low supply. My girlfriend also did a soy base with her baby boy & it made a huge difference. It's hard to have to try so many b/c you have to give it about 3-4 days to see if it makes a difference. We also used the ventaire bottles as someone else suggested. The Mylicon didn't seem to do much for my baby, but we got some Gripe Water at Henry's which also doubles as a hiccup reliever. She seemed to respond better to that. So....good luck trying things & finding the right combo for your baby!! :o)

Hi K., you must try Enfamil Nutrimigan. It is way expensive but so worth the money. My son had really bad gas pains and acid reflux and this was the only formula he could digest. It is the most easiest digestable formula on the market. We are spending a fortune, but so worth not seeing our son in pain. Good luck. I also had a lot of problems with breastfeeding which is why I use formula. It's okay and my son has never gotten sick and is one of the happiest babies I know so please don't be h*** o* yourself.

We had a good experience with Gentle Ease (it is a special product of the Enfamil Company). It did not solve the problems completely, but the situation improved. We actually combined it with Mylecon.

My son has the same problem, only he is strictly breastfed. I found out that he has a cow milk protein allergy. It stopped completely within hours of taking dairy of all types out of my diet. Consider a soy formula and try building up your milk supply by letting him use you as a pacifier. Even if he isn't hungry, let him suck. You were not very specific with the low milk supply, so maybe its not the advice you were looking for

Hi! We supplemented breast milk with Similac Isomil Soy Formula. My daughter didn't have any issues.
Hope that helps.

Hi K.!
I had tried Enfamil but found that my son did not like it. We stayed with Similac, it was the one the hospital sent us home with and I never had a problem with it. I would buy it at Costco for a bigger size at a better price. However, test it first and see how your baby responds to it. Good Luck.

The one key factor is he is a boy...they seem to have those problems more than girls. We actually used the Costco brand of formula with the Dr. Brown bottles (which makes a huge difference too). Finally, there are some homeopathic drops you can give that really help. It's called Bubble be gone and you can get them at the wellness center that is off of Lyons and Peachland. That's what worked for our son.

Goodluck

Hi K.,
I'm a neonatal nurse & often run into babies having an intolerance to certain formulas. Carnation Good Start has "comfort proteins" that seem to be easily digested by a lot of babies. It is available at Target also. If that doesn't work, your little one may have a lactose intolerance. There are some excellent "lactose free" formulas also. Enfamil makes one. It will be on the big label. Good luck!
