Moms,
I am desperately seeking some recommendations for a *great*, tender, understanding, patient, kind pediatric dentist who respects and understands children with a fear of going to the dentist...I've tried several on the peninsula and my son still struggles with going...any guidance or recommendations would be SO appreciated (I have Delta Dental insurance through my employer if that helps :))

all my kids LOVE Dr Lau in San Mateo ###-###-####.

We've had some unnecessary work done on the teeth that was NOT needed from one pediatric dentist on the Peninsula.

When I was younger I saw him and these days my 12 year old niece and 5 year old nephew and my own 2 year old go to Dr. Ligh. He is great and so are all the people who work there. They are so wonderful with the kids and the office is so kid friendly that my daughter was comfortable as soon as she walked in the door!

I take my kids to Dr James S. Kelly in Los Altos on Altos Oaks Rd. He is kind, cheerful, approachable and his dental assistant staff is very kid-friendly. There are movie screens in the ceiling above the dental chairs and the child can wear headphones to listen. There are about 5 chairs all in one room so kids are all together, not separated into different individual rooms. If you let them know ahead of time of the problem, I am sure they can help. Often the first time your son can just come and visit. Anyway, I tried a few before finding him and he is the best.

I have 5 kids and my 3 year old does not want anyone to get into her mouth for anything but her Dentist did. I love him and everyone in his office. HIs name is Dr. Charles Kao in Sunnyvale located at the corner of ElCamino and Mathilda (First Smile). He is truly amazing! I have twins that are 14 and they now both go to him as well, when they were younger we had a VERY bad experience with a Dentist and my one son refused to go, but said he would give Dr. Kao a try after my younger 3 had visited him a few times and now my 14year old says that he is the best dentist ever and I am always go to him even when I am an adult. He really is awesome.

We found a great one that works really fast in Fremont which alleviates my son's fears, we're in and out before he has time to dwell on where he is. The office staff is friendly, the place is pleasant with a climbing structure in the waiting room and a playstation in the rear of the office. Parents are welcome where they do the work. They get a token to spend on a toy of their choice when they are done. It's Dr. Morris at Young Smiles, 39572 Stevenson Bl, Fremont ###-###-####. I have also heard that Dr. Grant is wonderful in Union City on Dyer. I know they would be a bit of a drive for you, but you could shoot over 84, right? A great dentist is worth the trip every 6 months. Happy hunting. :)R.

Hi T.,

Have you tried Maria Aganon-Fu in Mtn View? She and her partner Dr. Pham are very good in my opinion. My son who's 11 has been going since he was 4, and after the first time has never complained. ###-###-#### if you're interested. 515 South Dr #10B, right behind El Camino Hospital.

Good luck!

I've been going to Dr. Ligh for years now, for all my children.
He is a really great Dr. and the kids love the office, it looks fun and it's always decorated very festive. Dr. Ligh is very nice, gental and patient with the children. Two of mine were scared when they were young and started to see him. They love going there now.

Good luck to you and yours!

My daughter was also 6 years old when she first visited the dentist. To make a long story short, she didn't have cavities, which was great, but permanent teeth were starting to sprout so we needed to make room. I highly recommend Terry Lau in San Mateo (255 N. San Mateo Drive, ###-###-####). He spoke the 6-year old language, had a wonderful staff, and his lab was clean and is fully equipped with distractions. The kids get to pick the movie they want to watch while Dr. Lau does his job. He was very knowledgeable and approachable. By the way, I found him through Yelp, which I was tentative about at first since I preferred referrals through friends. We got lucky we found us a great dentist.

My son goes to Dr Charles Spitz in San Mateo. He has been great for us and came highly recommended. I sure wish I had had a dentist like Dr Spitz when I was little. He makes it as fun as possible. He tells the kids what he is going to do and they can watch with a mirror or there are movies as well. Everyone in the office has been great.

We have a WONDERFUL pedi dentist in San Bruno named Joann Toy, DDM. She makes it so easy and my sons loves going there. The kids are given really cute sunglasses to wear while their teeth are cleaned and they watch cartoons on the ceiling. I highly reccommend her office! They run on time too which is really nice.

I take my kids to Dr. Purvi Zavery in San Carlos. My kids love her. She is great with kids and provides good advise. Not at all aggressive or pushing unnecessary treatment plans. Office is very nice and comfortable. Staff is polite and easy to deal with. I have Delta and she did accept my insurance.

I have a wonderful, caring Pediatric dentist. Her name is Jacqueline Dela Rosa ###-###-####. Her office is at 4867 Mission Street in SF. I struggled finding someone that is friendly, efficient, and trustworthy. She has cartoons playing to help relax the kids. She also talks to them and explains what will happen. She'll even let them hold some tools to make them more familiar with what's happening. She definitly cares about each child. She graduated from UCSF and is very knowledgable.

She is great. I have heard other parents say that she got their fearful child to relax and have a little fun to. They will go to her but not others. I dont have the fearful child, so I can only say what I have heard in that realm. If it helps she als works with special needs children in her office.

Hope this helps

My daughter with autism goes there. The hygienist and dentist are extra gentle and are trained extremely patient with everyone. The kids can watch video on the ceiling while their teeth are worked on. My daughter was strapped before in another pedi-dentist office, but never needed here, she is not afraid to come to this office.
