My newest grandson is now 7 wks. old. He has been a good-natured little baby since birth, but on Sunday he started something new. He would start crying for no reasonHe has no temperature, isn't hungry, isn't wet, just restless. My daughter still hasn't found time to join this group, so I am requesting assistance for her. She is a first-time mom. She has used the swing and various "soothing" toys without a lot of help at this point. Can anyone offer suggestions for little Brooks?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter went to the library immediately after getting the responses about the DVD "Happiest Baby on the Block". She checked out the DVD, went home and watched it. It has helped. Of course, it has been only a few days. The fact that the baby waves his arms around all the time must have kept him from sleeping, so the swaddling routine is helping. Thank you all for the information.

The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD worked for us too, like the previous poster suggested. In particular, the "Shssing" worked for us. Our son was calmed by both a hand-held dust vacuum and the hair dryer. He was calmed by the "white noise"...but it had to be loud, which is something addressed by the DVD. I wanted to laugh every time I heard my husband start up the dust vac, but I couldn't ever say anything because it really worked. :) Who knew? Good luck!

Get Happiest Baby on the Block. You read the book and she can read it when she has time and get the DVD for both of you to watch right off. Most libraries have both. The calming technique is amazing! I wish I had had it with my first instead of my fifth.

Just in case this isn't relieved by the previous suggestions... If your daughter is nursing, she may be ingesting something that her baby's tummy doesn't like. She may keep a food diary and see if this behavior matches up with a certain food or food combination. Other, if he is having formula this may be the cause... you may need to switch. You may consider whether or not you've changed, laundry detergent or household cleaners.... He may be uncomfortable in some way that isn't obvious.

Many Blessings!!
