Okay Ladies, I need some mommy advice! My husband and I are trying to have another baby. I should have gotten my period last week (LMP 6/10/08) I have not gotten it yet and I do not have the typical symptoms that I am going to get it. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests over the last week and they are all coming up negative. How long should I wait before I call my OB? Has anyone had false negatives? Thanks in Advance!

What can I do next?

Yes, call the OB here. Watch out for a tubal pregnancy here. I don't know all of the medical symptons for that but play it SAFE. Keep us posted.

Were you on birth control? Are your cycles normally regular? When are you taking the test (time of day)? Are you under any additional stress right now?

I'm asking these questions because the answers can give you a better look at what's going on.

If you were on birth control, it is possible that it can take up to 18 months before conceiving. This is not the case for everyone, however, just a guideline. Going off of birth control can also have an effect on your menstrual cycle. It can take several months for your system to regulate.

If you have cycles that are not regular, you may just be 'late' this time around. My cycles usually ran 32-35 days. And, now, because I am breastfeeding, I hadn't had a period until last month (when my son turned 5 months), but even then, I don't feel like I'm going to have one anytime soon this month, lol. So, if you have irregular cycles, you need to take note of that.

It is recommended that a pregnancy test should be taken first thing in the morning. This is because the hCG levels are the highest in your urine at this time of day due to you being in bed and not urinating all night. I'm not totally sure how long you have to wait to take one (first day of your missed period or later) because I was able to find out the day I was supposed to start my period with both of my children. I odn't really think it matters what brand you use either because I used the super cheap ones from the dollar store ($4 for the pee-on-a-stick kind and $1 for the syringe kind).

If you are under any kind of stress that is not in your normal range, this can cause your cycles to become irregular. If you are stressed about trying to conceive, this can really mess things up, lol. It took us over a year to conceive our daughter. But, three months after we stopped worrying about it and I started charting, I got pregnant. With my son, I got pregnant on accident, lol.

I hope this is at least somewhat helpful.

God bless,
A.

My best friend is an RN, I too did the same on both my girls. I do not know what it is about girls. you CAN get false negatives but not false positives!!! THE BEST pregnancy tests to get are the Dollar Tree pregnancy tests. THAT is personal experience. Honey I haev 3 kids!! and ALWYS get negative results. wait a few days ore just go get it now. but I too still had my period and was pregnant!!! so just because you do or do not have your period does not mean you are or are not pregnant.
It is more common not to have a period while you are. I had mine for 2 months with my son, that is why I didn't know I was pregnant. Good luck let me know how it goes!!! H.

I did get a false negative b/c I did not wait long enough. My doc suggests waiting until you are 2 weeks late to take a test. I got more accurate results with the First Response brand. I know it is hard, but wait a few more days and try First Response.

Good luck to you!

Ok.. i knew that i was pregnant but those damn tests kept coming back negative.. I was due May 5th for my period and didn't get it.. I was on birth control (nuvaring) in april and didn't re-insert it so I though maybe my periods were just whacked.. but I had a feeling, before any of the pregnancy symptoms (5th pregnancy.. my body just may know!) I took a prego test on a Monday it was negative.. by that Friday the 23rd it was positive.. It's when the HCG levels are higher.. my family doctor told me that it was possible i got pregnant 2 weeks prior to my missed period & the home prego test usually pick up around 5 weeks pregnant.. That's why i took so many and they were all negative.. lol So i would keep trying.. buy the cheap ones and i would say start taking prenatals.. they aren't going to hurt.. Good luck!!

It may be that you are under stress and that is messing up your cycle. Also, it is probably too soon to tell with a pregnancy test because it has only been a week. Usually a positive will come up about 2 wks. after a missed period. I took them a few days after a missed period and it came out negative so I waited for 2 wks. and got a positive. Also, your body can trick itself into thinking it's pregnant and you can miss your period and eventually come out with a positive result only to go to the doctor and find out that you are not pregnant. Give it another week take another test and see what happens. If it is still negative then call your ob and find out what's going on.

I did the same thing with my 2nd child. I took 2 test and they both came back negative. Finally after I waited a few more days and I thought for sure I was preggers I took a 3rd and if came back positive. I would just give a a few more days and try again. Good Luck!

Is it possible that, like most women, your cycle is more than 28 days? If that is the case, you may just be right on time.

It might not hurt to get a copy of "Taking Control of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. She explains a lot of that stuff in her book.

I've never had a false negative, but like the other post says the tests measure the hcg hormone once it reaches a certain level. There are other reasons for a period to be late, but if you're "trying" I would call your OB and ask what he/she recommends, it can't hurt. Worst case scenario they'll tell you to wait another week or two and see if your period starts or a test turns positive, best case they can bring you in and do a blood test. These tests are pretty accurate, but they are more likely to have a false negative than a false positive.

As a Medical assistant I have to disagree with what Debbie said...Stress can effect your cycle...and if you are trying to get pregnant you may be under more stress than you realize. Also it takes 10 days after conception to have a positive pregnancy test, but it depends on how fast your levels mulitiply. Also it is possible to have false negatives because your levels may not be high enough to register on the test. I would give it another week then take another test and see your doctor. It is probably the stress of trying to get pregnant that is messing with you. Anyway good luck with getting pregnant! from a women ttc to another hopefully you are!

Hi, I was three months pregnant before I knew it. I didn't get my period so I took a test that come back negative. Then I went another month without one and finally went to the doctor. I took a test there and it came back negative. They finally ran a blood test which showed high estogen levels. Took another pregnancy test that finally showed I was pregnant. I asked them how this could happen and they said that sometimes a test is given too early to show a pregnancy. I hope that helps. If you have concerns I would contact a doctor. It is worth a try. Good Luck

wait about 3-5 more days and try again. that happened the 1st time or you could get your blood drawn at your dr's office. i have to add from one of the last comments.... tubal pregnancies WILL make the test positive. i don't think that person knew what they were talking about. but don't worry, i'm sure you are fine, maybe even with a bun in ther oven:)

Hi D.! I too had this problem when I got pregnate the second time. I was sure I was, but every test I took came up negative. I took three in one week. Then I waited until a week or two after my cycle was scheduled to start and took a different kind ( I liked the ones that say pregnate or not of the clear blue) and it came up positive. Good Luck!

Your trying to hard, relax and don't dwell on it, your period will come and then in a few months you'll be delighted to find your pregnant.

I had a whole slew of false prego tests with my second child. I called my OB because I was 3-4weeks late with negative results, but we were trying. I went in and they confirmed what I knew - pregnant. So, I'd call your OB and ask them if you should come in. Good luck.

I had two false negatives. I ended up going in the military and found out nine days later that I was pregnant. I also had to take I think six or seven before it was confirmed. They were saying I was pregnant but the hormone levels were not high enough to be considered pregnant.

Don't get your hopes up during this time. You will get pregnant when your body is ready to support a little life. If your tests came back negative, then you are not pregnant. The tests today are very very accurate. If you keep stressing about your period, you're going to cause yourself to be late just from that stress. Also, if you have recently gone off of birth control, your cycles are going to be way out of whack anyway, and you won't be able to go off of being "late". Sometimes there are 6-7 weeks between my cycles.

It is possible to get a false negative, but never a false positive. I have four children. I have been through this myself. I have even had a blood test done by my OB that came up negative, however 2 1/2 months later I was listening to my daughters heartbeat! Just hang int there a couple of more weeks, if after a month you hav enot had your period, or a positive home test see your doctor. It could still be a little early for a home test to pick up the HCG hormones. Good luck!

I have been married for eleven years and have four girls ages 10,7,5,3. Sometimes not trying is the quickest way to concieve!

I have had a false negative before, I think I took the test too soon, and then I decided to wait a few more days and I took a second one! But the pink line was so faint the second time, that I overlooked it and threw it out. A few hours later, something told me to go look at it again, and I did! I pulled it out of the trash and the pink lines were there, I was pregnant! But if I were you (of course I don't know your cycle and if your period is every 28 days) I would wait until at least mid next week to take another one, if you really have good patience even wait until next friday.. I would think the reading would be pretty accurate by that point! I hope this helps...
