My Kids Keep Getting Colds....

Hi there ladies. Just wondering if anyone else is having or has had this problem before...My kids (2yrs & 6mths) keep coming down with colds. My older son goes to a small inhome daycare 4-6 days/mth (depending on our finances)& my baby is home with me all the time. My youngest just turned 6mths old & he is now sick with his 6th cold since birth. Every other week for the past 3 months one/both of them has caught a cold. This seems REALLY excessive to me. They don't get terribly sick, usually just a runny nose/cough, general cold symptoms but I'm a firm believer in staying home & limiting their contact with others while they are exibiting these symptoms so we don't get others sick. We've missed more playdates & weekend trips to CA to see family than I can count due to them being sick all the time! They just can't manage to stay healthy for more than a week at a time. We wash hands often & use disinfecting wipes at home to decrease germs, take vitamins w/ extra vitamin c for immunity boost, what else can I do? I'm at a loss here & feel like I'm gonna lose it if they get sick one more time. I've spoken with our pediatrician & she doesn't seem alramed by how often they are getting ill. Am I overreacting? Is this "normal" for anyone else? TIA for any thoughts/suggestions on this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input. In response to the suggestion of it being allergies...There has been fever on 2 occasions for each child. Our baby has had an ear infection that accompanied a cold 3 times over the last 6mths & his big brother doesn't just have a clear runny nose, it's thick green boogies. Also, each time they get sick both of them have had a terrible cough that if their lungs were strong enough to force the mucus out it would be productive. I'm fairly certain it's not allergies. I use the antibacterial wipes sparingly, mostly as everyone else for chicken cleanup & when boys are sick I do wipe down the doorknobs, fridge etc in attempt to prevent my husband/myself from getting sick. I've thought maybe mold also but this has been ruled out. I had my own Shaklee business & used the products but saw no improvement from them. I'm definitely going to try to the chiro & look into some herbal supplements. Thanks again ladies, I really appreciate all the replies.

find a chiropractor that will see kids. Regular chiropractic adjustments help keep the immune & nervous system functioning at their best. I have a 3, 6, & 7 yr olds who are all in school/preschool and very rarely catch colds. My kids see the chiropractor at 4921 E. Bell Rd.

Fortunately for me, my 3 year old little girl has only had two colds since birth - and they were very short.

But I was (and still am) unable to allow her to stay with anyone but myself, and I've no other children.

I have a cousin that has had her little ones in awesome little preschool programs and activities since they could walk and talk... and from that point on, they both seemed to always have little colds. One would get it from another child and then bring it home to their sibling. It seemed to me that they'd share colds on the average of at least once every couple of weeks.

So... although you're very thoughtful in keeping your children away from others while they're sick, not everyone shares in that quality. People send their children to school, preschool, ballet, etc. sick, all the time... unconcerned about the health of anyone else.

A few months ago I took my little girl to her preballet class and a mother was there 'hacking up her lungs'. As she coughed repeatedly, she reassured us that her child was ok not to catch what she had, because she'd already been through it. It didn't even enter her mind that MY child or even myself, the other children and mothers HADN'T gone through it, and that she was still capable of giving it to us.
So you see... some people are thoughtless (intentionally or not).

Good luck with your little ones!

I often think that using anti-bacterial on everything isn't a good idea because it even kills mild germs that help build up our immune system without getting us sick. Don't get me wrong, I'll clean up after chicken with anti-bacterial, but for most things I just use soap and water.

It's my understanding that babies and smaller children can get anywhere from 7-10 colds a year, especially in a school or daycare setting. I've seen through experience that it seems to be true. Hang in there. Watch for ear infections. It's possible that it could also be allergies.

It sounds like basically a continualy runny nose. Can you see a break between them? This is not necessarily colds he keeps catching, it could be food allergies. As far as keeping him away from kids, except for the first day or so, by the time they start having the runny nose, the cold is no longer contagious. (btw this goes for coughs, too.) The exception is if there's a fever involved. If these really are colds, you can think of it this way, each cold he catches is one less stratin he'll catch later, and it's helping his immune system become stronger with each one he fights off. If throughout his first year or so, he's still getting runny noses, kick that doctor to the curb, find one who will listen to your concerns and figure out what's up.

Is it runny noses with no fever then I would say you are ok. Runny noses does not always mean your child is sick it can be allergies, teething & alot of other things. Now if they have the fever everytime then maybe I would be looking into other things. Maybe there is something in the house that is causing it, some toy that might be made out of something that makes them sick, maybe a certain fragrance candle you burn. If it is fever related evertime I definately would push the Dr. to check further maybe with some blood test. good luck

It is common to get sick a lot in a daycare situation. I don't remember my children getting that many though. Have you looked into the fact that they may have allergies?

allergies??

dont worry about having everything antibacterial! Wash hands with (regular) soap and water suffices. (My husband is a veterinarian and asks that I DONT buy antibacterial stuff. I do have AB wipes for kitchen counters after I've cut raw meat, etc, or cleaning toilets, but other than that, no.

Hi D.-
Your poor little babies. I hate when kids get colds. I have a grandson that is 5 1/2. He has had a chronic cold, (and what I believed to be an allergy) for almost 4 years of his life. He and my daughter have lived in the same apartment complex, same apartment, since we moved from mesa az, to portland or. We just found out that the chronic cold has been caused by mold. My daughter is a clean person and keeps her house clean and tidy, but apparently the mold was in the walls by the windows, and water had seeped into areas of ceiling that had caused mold to grow in closets, and bathroom areas.
Mold can be a very dangerous thing when people are living amoung it, and sometimes you are completly unaware. Talk to your peditrician about the possibility of that happening with your children. Good luck to you on this.

Really sounds more like allergies. Forced air heat can really aggravate sinus symptoms during this cold weather. Try a humidifier and I'm with the rest of the ladies - lay off the antibacterial overkill. It's just NOT necessary.

If I were you I would be giving them Arcozon everyday. I never allow my sons to take pharmaceuticals or any over the counter medication anymore. The AMA and the drug companies are brainwashing people into thinking that the chronic illnesses suffered by so many Americans today are "normal" and need to be "treated" - find a doctor that uses natural remedies - or better yet - do research and be your own "doctor". I only use all-natural herbal remedies made from wild-grown Amazon herbs - and they actually work - I haven't been sick in over three years - with anything. I use an immune booster formula as well as several other formulas to always be improving and maintaining my health. You can check out my website: www.shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net for specifics or feel free to contact me with any questions.

I have 2 boys (3 & 6). The younger one has been prone to many mild colds his whole life. He just seems to have a weaker immune system than my first born or is subjected to more germs coming home from the older one's school. Who knows. He is also a VERY picky eater. About a year ago I found Kidz Super Food at Sprouts. It is a chocolate drink powder of fruits and vegetables that I mix with organic milk a few times a day. He loves it and has been soooo much healthier this year!

Agree wtih no anti-bacterial soap at all (except for maybe wipes cleaning up from raw meat, etc).

I also agree wtih going to a chiro/nutritionist and getting treatments....although they may say some things that will shock you and you may not agree wtih. Truely, those keep my kids healthy...regular treatments, no toxins, Cod liver oil every day (the type sweetened for kids). No anti-bacterial anything. It's worth the money, and some stuff is covered by insurance.

I agree with getting rid of the toxins/chemicals in the home. My children had the same problem with runny noses, etc every time we turned around. A friend of mine told me that the chemicals in laundry soap/fabric softener are inhaled as we sleep and can be a major contributor. I switched to Shaklee's Get Clean products and the change in my children was amazing. My husband and I noticed a changed in ourselves as well. I've since made it my home business. Please check out the website: www.shaklee.net/denisefriedl
for more information. I hope you find what works for you!

Take care,

D.
