Mamas & Papas-

Did you or someone you know ever use hypnosis for behavior modification, whether its smoking cessation, anxiety, weightloss, or anything else? How did it work for you/ them? How do you know if it "took?" How much did it run? and how do you vet if someone is "qualified?"

Lastly, are there any "religious prohibitions" to using hypnosis. is it akin to witchcraft for the very religious?

Hypnosis has nothing to do with Witchcraft. Though many Witches do practice Alternative Healing or Holestic Healing. A Hypnotist has to be well trained and certified.

I've used a self-hypnosis CD to help me control my eating. It's been very effective for me. And it's cured my husbands insomnia :) There is no hoo-doo-voo-doo involved. He's simply getting you to relax and focus on your goals. I listened every night for the first month, now we listen 1-2x a week or as I feel myself slipping. I wish I could find someone local to give me some more detailed therapy such as Everley had mentioned.

My in-laws, smokers of 50 years, did hypnosis to stop smoking. They stopped for 2 whole years. But, then, they stopped doing the follow-up tapes to keep them centered on their goal, started hanging around with a bunch of smokers, and boom, they started smoking again. I know, I know... HOW could you go back after all that time????

Oh, and as far as religious prohibitions, I'm sure if your religion was opposed to it you'd already know.

I have bought the book on weight loss with a CD in it for self hypnosis. I listened to it a bit but it kind of freaked me out. There is the guys normal voice talking and then a voice whispering to your sub conscience. He's a very popular guy, I think his name is Paul something.

I am pretty religious and this kind of mind manipulation was too troubling for me. I did read the book and get the just of it. It asks you to recall a time when you felt successful and confident. Then you apply that feeling to what ever your issue is. It then motivates you to make the choices you need to make in order to be successful.

I have done some visulization doing that kind of thing and it does help, i.e. I have been successful before with art or speaking or organizing events. People let me know I did a great job. So apparently I am not weak and powerless. I can be successful in loosing weight. It's going to take many choices before I am successful but it's not impossible. I find that helpful.

My mother is a hypnotherepist, she does not currently practice but I know of no religious issues with it personally - she never brought that up. I think most people that use hypnosis are open minded individuals any way. I have not used it for behaivor modification but when my parents divorced we saw a hypnotherepist & when I suffered my miscarriage I went back to her. I enjoyed the experience and found it to be MUCH more helpful then talking a subject to death.

I did hypnobirthing for my 2nd child and it worked wonders! Both of my kids were natural births with no meds and the 2nd was almost comfortable. Still lots of pressure, but nothing out of control. The first birth felt like hell, but had a great ending.

I have also used similar behavior modification tactics for anxiety and it has completely changed me for the better. I am able to control my symptoms even in extreme situations. If I feel like I'm slipping back into old patterns I can easily visualize and talk myself out of that old fear.

So, yes, it totally works!

The sessions I had weren't that expensive. Call around to see what they charge. Changing the way you think is empowering and rewarding and sure beats taking medication for things you can control with your own mind. I can't imagine anyone would think that is anti-religious.

When you quiet your mind of all the stressful thoughts and plans you are trying to get done you can often just be quiet and still. This is when you can get stuff into your subconscious mind deeper than just your short term memory.

Meditation or visualization with relaxation exercises uses this all the time. It is a way of getting to the core of your mind so to speak. Being relaxed and open minded is a good way to approach this.

Subliminal tapes are quite different than hypnosis. You go in and visit with the person before you do the hypnosis. They have a clear idea of what you want or don't want to happen. I think if you try to look at this with an open mind you will find that it can work how ever you want it to go.

If you can go to a book/music store and look at the self help tapes you might find some that address the issues you're wanting to work on too.

My parents took me to a hypnotist-first with my issues in Math at school. I know it sounds crazy but it actually helped me with my anxieties and focus. The second time was for anxiety in general. It helped me to relax and to build up my self esteem, especially in social situations.

My brother went for weight management. It helped control his impulse to eat too much all the time. He also lost weight and has continued to maintain ever since then( age 12-now).

I continue to use self hypnosis to relax and to reduce anxiety, as well as grinding my teeth in my sleep. All have decreased with this practice.

I do not remember how much it costs, but it was very affordable.

I don't believe that their is any religious prohibitions, although I am sure someone would think it would be. Just because they don't have a clue as to what it does, and how it helps.

That's their choice, but for me, it worked.

I know a woman who used hypnosis for weight loss. She went for just a few group sessions, and was hypnotized to eat only protein and veggies. I think it was like she could eat whenever she wanted, but no processed carbs, and every time she ate, there had to be protein included. She has been doing this for about a year with no cravings, and has had amazing results. She's gone from something like a size 24 to an 8.
