So my sister in law is pregnant about 15 weeks and she has been having headaches before she goes to bed. She thinks they are possibly migraines, but doesn't want to keep taking tylenol day after day. Does anyone have any suggestions for relief?

What can I do next?

Hi,

I just got an e-mail a few weeks ago called "who knew". It was all about different household items that could be used for other things that you would never think of. It said that 2 glasses of gatorade could take away headache pains almost immediately without the side affects of all the other "pain relievers"! Fortunately I don't get headaches so I can't say if it works or not, but I think it would definitely be worth a shot. Good luck and I hope something works to maker her feel better. It is hard enough being pregnant in the first few months much less having and added stress.

Headaches can induce nausea and, worse, vomiting and dehydration--a "no no" during pregnancy. Keep taking Tylenol (extra strength is great!), or Excedrin is okay. Headaches between 16-20 weeks are usually caused by blood vessel vasospasms due to an increase in blood volume. Not fun, but it usually resolves. Hang in there!!

Hi M.,

I have a history of migraines and did have a few while I was pregnant as well. I tried to stave them off when I first started to get one by drinking a little caffeine, coke, was great. But if that didn't work my doctor proscribed with a pill that I should take instead of my normal prescription for migraines that I took before I got pregnant. I can't remember the name right now but it really was a life saver and was safe to take while pregnant. I have a healthy little boy to prove it. I even prefer to take this new pill now instead of what I used to take before when I got migraines. Hope that helps. I will doubel check tonight what the name of hte prescription was so email me back if you need the name. Thanks and tell your sis congrats and good luck.

I wouldn't recommend Excedrin as it contains aspirin. I had to stop taking my migraine pills when I got pregnant and while they were horrible at first- my dr wrote an rx for Tylenol with codeine to try and control them... they've actually died down for the first time in over ten years.

Suggestions:

Try and find the cause- the fastest way to cure/treat an illness is to eliminate the cause. (granted this doesn't always work as you may still have after effects) If she needs a nap- take it. If she's dehydrated- drink something (preferably Gatorade or something to replenish the electrolytes.) If she needs to eat- eat!

Showers. I used to shut the door in the bathroom- have my boyfriend check on me every few minutes and then curl up in the shower until the headache went away or the water got too cold. The upside/downside being if you puke! Hey- all clean :)

However sometimes things can't simply be fixed by a good meal and a nap. Stress is a part of everyones daily lives- she can try reducing it (if possible), having her so or family member rub her back, etc.

If this is a new thing and it doesn't end pretty quick like- I think you should recommend she visit her doctor. Headaches/migraines can be indicative of an underlying concern from high blood pressure ranging to cancer. Or it could just be all the extra hormones.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out

We recently had another post on this subject with many great responses...you might look back on the list of requests to find it. My sister-in-law and I both used peppermint oil which can be found at health food stores. We both would put it on our temples and then use a small massager to massage our temples with the oil. Worked great!

I am currently pregnant and in early weeks I had horrible headaches and migraines daily. I finally called the doctor and he told me to drink a regular caffeinated pop a day...... and if I still happen to get headaches take 500 mg of Tylenol. Since I have drank the regular pop everyday I have not gotten headaches and when I feel them coming on I remember to drink my pop...

Hope it helps :)

I had a lot of headaches with my first pregnancy too. My doctor didn't have much advice except with the Tylenol. So my own advice is...drink lots of water, sometimes dehydration can cause headaches. Also, there is a nerve or something that runs in that 'web' between your thumb and pointer finger. If you squeeze it for a few seconds (it hurts when you squeeze it) sometimes that alleviates your headache. I don't know why that works...my grandma taught it to me. She had a lot of headaches.
