im kinda scared, everyone else says that it probably isnt anything to worry about but i just want a second opinion. I have a 10 month old baby who usually has no problem with eating and has NEVER thrown up, maybe spit up a little but no throwing up like this. it just started today, he threw up his breakfast and i mean all of his breakfast, then all of his lunch. we decided that we should give him pedialyte to replace everything he threw up, well guess what...he threw that up too! I decided to some researching and the only thing i could find that was remotely simular to his symptoms was sternal stynosis ( i think thats what it was called. I really hope that someone out there can give me answer because apparently that thing would call for surgery. So does anyone have a second opinion?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

so i took him to the doctor, they gave him some medicine and pedialyte and things are definitely a little better. he's stopped throwing everything up but is still a bit lethargic. although today he got into a laughing fit which was amazing. I'm definitely saving all this advice on here in case if this happens again, thank you guys so much for the advice!

Hi H.. Let me first make a suggestion to you: Don't ever plug your babies symptoms into the internet & diagnose. I find it's a good tool if you already know what's wrong & it'll help you find relief tips & stuff like that but diagnosing like that on your own is a scarey thing & ends up giving your kid extreme things like sternal stynosis. Having said that, there is a stomach bug going around. Babies are not immune to these things. :) Wish they were. Many people in my family have gotten it. They puke their brains out for about 36 hours & then they are done. I would guess this is probably what's going on. She's just got a bug. Try your best to keep her hydrated. If she swallows even some, even if she pukes it back up, she's keeping at least a tiny bit in.

Since she's never thrown up before like this let me tell you, it ALWAYS looks like more that what is actually coming out.

I hope your little one feels better soon. :) If you're that worried about it, you can always take her to the doctor. To me though, it just sounds like a "bug." Good luck & Happy New Year!

You are more likely to be seeing the symptoms of a simple virus than a serious disease, but the best thing you can do in either case is call your pediatrician and ask to come in at the end of the day to be seen for an ill child visit. Until you get there just calm down and don't force foods or liquids on him that are just making his tummy feel worse. Let him have bland foods and plain water in small amounts, just when he's hungry or thirsty.

Every kid gets sick for the first time eventually, and mom is always terrified when it happens. Get ahold of yourself now because this is not the last vomit party you will be attending with your child. Ask the doctor to run a throat culture and a stool sample just to ease your mind that it is not a bacterial infection, and then prepare yourself to let whatever it is run it's course.

Hi, H.,

Sounds like a tummy bug. These bugs come with or without fever. But don't be surprised if the diarrhea starts within the next couple days. Fun New Year, I know! :) But, often, the vomiting stops with the onset of the diarrhea, so hopefully you won't have to deal with both at once.

Just keep the fluids coming. After he vomits, wait for half an hour to let the stomach acids settle down. Then give him small - like an ounce - amounts of liquids (breastmilk, water, pedialyte). Wait for 15 minuts, and if it stays down, give him another ounce. If it doesn't stay down, wait another half hour, and try again. You'll have to keep doing this until the vomiting stops. If he gets dehydrated, he will become lethargic, dizzy when sitting or standing, tight skin, and sunken eyes. If you see these symptoms, you'll need to get him to an ER to get IV fluids right away.

These bugs last as long as seven days, unfortunately. You just have to wait for it to pass. So don't panic, but if your mommy instinct tells you to take him to the doctor, do it. You know him better than anyone else.

Blessings,
J.

Blessings to you and your little one. I hope it passes soon.

Does he have a temperature? Maybe try some green jello, not red, so you know it is not blood if it come back up. and plain rice, plain toast, plain broth. His body is purging something that did not set well with him, with all the holiday food ect...who knows, his diet is probably been changed a little. You can also call your doctor on call.

The stomach flu is going around. My daughter threw up Tuesday 4 times. You have to give his tummy time to heal. Just liquids the first day. When you give him Pedialyte, just give him a teaspoon every 15 minutes. If he doesn't throw it up after 1 hour, increase it to 2 teaspoons. You can use a medicine syringe. The important thing is to keep him hydrated. Try not to worry, this usually clears itself in 24 hours. Go slow with the food and keep the diet bland (BRAT - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast). But try not to give him any food until he hasn't thrown up for awhile. The doctor will usually tell you not to give him food unless he's begging for it....or 12 hours after he hasn't thrown up. But use your best judgement. He won't starve to death...just try to keep him hydrated!! Any questions, call your doctor. That's why they get paid the BIG bucks.

I'm not sure why everyone is getting so scared! Why do you think it's anything but a stomach bug? Probably Rotovirus or Nora Virus. They go around all the time.

Stop giving him food. Nurse on demand for at least 24 hours and give no solids until 24 hours after the last puking episode. Then slowly re-introduce bland, easily-digestible foods like cereal (oat meal is good) and apple sauce. Babies get over stomach viruses very quickly, my son used to puke and then ask for more food! He'd show no indication of being sick, then look at you with a funny look and puke EVERYTHING he'd eaten, and then act like nothing had happened. Our nurse said they have to go on "gut rest" for a couple days because their stomachs are so sensitives, even after the virus passes they will continue to puke if they eat too much. Just a couple ounces of food per day for the first couple days and then nurse on demand.

Good Luck:)

I say, like the other mamas, it's more than likely just a tummy bug. Do you still/or did you nurse? That's all you need to do right now. If not, like the one mama said bland foods in small amounts (the braty diet). It is a real bummer dealing with it I know.
I just read Sarah D.'s response and she has it exactly right!

That happened to my little guy too at around a year. He threw up EVERYTHING for about two days. I called the nurse helpline through my insurance company and they recommended that I wait for a while after he throws up. If he can go like an hour without throwing up, then give him one teaspoon of pedialyte. If he keeps that down for a half hour, then give him another teaspoon. Just try something TINY and work your way up. After my little guy kept his first teaspoon down, I gave him about a tablespoon. I'm sure your little one has a virus. They usually get over those quickly, just don't be alarmed at the amount they can actually throw up. He was so sad, and just limp in my arms, but he was back to normal in about two days. Just give him as much rest as possible and give clear liquids in tiny amounts and let those little amounts settle before you give more. Don't worry about him starving, he'll make it up when he feels better. This is very common in kids this age, especially at this time of year. Keep tabs on his temperature. If his temp gets really high, or if he starts acting completely out of sorts, or not like himself then take him in to the doctor. Good luck and keep us posted on how he's doing!

I completely agree with everybody else about this being just a stomach bug... kids get sick all the time! That's how they build up their immunity. If your baby keeps throwing up the next day and can't keep anything at all in his stomach, call the pediatrician immediately and he can prescribe a medication to control the vomit.

My advice for now and the future, any time you have kids throwing up, grab all the large towels in the house and cover all the areas (floor, couches, beds) in the room. Every time there's an accident, you can just pick up the towel and wash it instead of scrubbing carpets or making a bed in the middle of the night! It can save your sanity!

My daughter had that happen to her at around that age too, just so happens at the same time of year! We took her to the ER because we were visiting family, with a child so tiny you just don't want to take any chances of dehydration. They gave her an x-ray to check out her upper GI tract to make sure nothing was lodged in there-- just telling you my experience, not to scare ya, anyway nothing was, they gave her a little anti vomiting meds and she had jello in the waiting area (which she loved by the way) and we waited, and the medicine worked. I was still nursing along with her solid foods diet at the time, and I was instructed not to do so because it was just too rich for her, so for 3 long days she just drank gatorade because she HATED the pedialite. Oh, guess I didn't mention that her diagnosis was a tummy bug that was going around. Which is probably what your son has. I would call a doctor, or go into an urgent care facility to be seen ASAP. Good luck!!

Little ones can pick up "bugs" very easy... just by taking them to the store or anywhere this time of year - even by you going out touching something then picking them up before washing your hands. If he has only been throwing up for a day he might be better tomorrow... I wouldn't be concerned about the sternal stynosis. I know your little one is young, but sometimes ice pops help when my kids and I are throwing up, because it less liquid hitting the stomuc at one time. Or give smaller amounts of fluids at a time... pedialyte is good, but is out of my budget so we use Power Aid or Gateraid when the kids need extra nutrition, they almost have the same stuff in them.

Something you should watch is the number of wet diapers... you know your little one, but they do say fewer then 6 wet diapers or no wet diaper in 8 hours is a sign of dehydration. As long as you keep he hydrated he should be ok. Go see a doc in a few days if he isn't feeling better or go to the hospital if his diaper count gets low.

With my kids I have one main rule... I know my kids better then anyone else. Even if I feel dumb after going to the ER - if I think my little ones need to go they go. So far, I haven't been laughed out of the hospital... most of the time I'm told that I had every right & concern to think something wasn't right & have caught things quite early making it easier for my kids to heal quicker.

I do have one kids that has different reasons for needing to go to the ER then the others... if she spikes a fever for no appenent reason we are to go to the ER right away. Not wait the normal time or call the doc - she has arthritis, so sometimes there are issues with it or other things we can't see and fever is a sign of something being wrong.

Guess my point is - all in all follow your heart... do what it says when it comes to your little one. The saying "mothers know best" is very true in that you do know what is best for your little one.

Hope your little guy feels better soon & that it's just a little bug.

I see you already got a ton of good advice! Sometimes when my son is really congested it will make him gag and throw up. A humidifier or some nasal spray can sometimes help with that. If your son absolutely can't keep anything down, an urgent care center or ER can give him some anti-nausea medicine so he won't get dehydrated. Other than that, you might just have to wait it out. Good luck!

I have always waited a couple of hours before giving them anything to make sure there body has time to recover. Then I start to gradually give them fluids so their body doesn't reject them. I had one child who couldn't stop so I had to stop food and water for 3 hours to help is body recover. He was then fine. Popsicles are a great starter.

How old is your child? It sounds like the flu/stomach bug. When my son was 11 months old he contracted the ROTO virus. IT SUCKED! The entire family got it and we all vomited for three days. The doctor told us there was not any medicine we could take because it was viral. It just had to run its course. Follow the BRAT diet....Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast and drink pedialyte or gatorade. We finally made it through, but it was a rough couple of days and I would never wish it on my worst enemy. Even after that, it took probably 10 days before my son was eating normal ago. As long as your child is still having wet diapers, he is probably fine. No wet diapers in a 24 hour period means he is dehydrated and needs to be seen by a physician.

You should call your pediatrician immediately! This could be life-threatening. He could have something lodged in his GI tract which is causing the contents to eject. Maybe he swallowed a coin. Or he could have spontaneous esophageal reflux and who knows what could be the cause. They will probably have you take him to the nearest ER. He should get an x-ray to see what's going on. I don't want to scare you but you should call a professional.

It could be the Roto virus. My son got that last year and it started the same way. Out of no where he threw up EVERYTHING he took in. You can call your ped. but if it is that virus theres nothing they can do other then test for it. What we did was offer the pedialyte in very small amounts at first. Put an oz or two in a cup or bottle, let him drink it then wait to see if he vomits. After about 15-20 minutes offer him another small amount. Also monitor for a fever, and you can rotate tylenol& motrin but call your Dr. for dose amount. If he does have this virus or another stomach bug, pedialyte is the best and maybe try the BRAT diet too. Banana, rice, applesauce, toast. So age appropriate versions like baby cereal with water, etc. But if you have questions call your doctor and steer away from internet research, that can scare any parent to death!! Good luck, and hope your little one feels better :)

Sounds like he just has a GI virus. Give the doctor a call to see how they like to treat it. We just do a tablespoon of pedialyte or breast milk every 15 minutes and increase the amount each hour if the baby keeps it down. If he vomits, wait an hour and start over. Good luck!
