Dear Moms,

Is it safe to apply suncreen to my 10-month old? If so, which brand do you trust to do the job? or what ingredients do you look for?

Thanks so much!
S..

I use the Aveno spray on type. My ped told me to stick with a brand that was for sensitive skin, but that the baby formulas were not necessarily the best bet for my daughter's extremely pale skin. HTH

Hi S.,

My dermatologist said @ 6 months a child is old enough for sunscreen, she recommended blue lizard baby spf 30, but I also use the aveeno baby spf 55. My son and I have very sensitive and pale skin and light hair and they are the two brands that I have used without any problems.

You can also buy clothes with the spf, (I've seen them in the L.L.Bean, Hanna Anderson and One Step Ahead catalogs, I am sure there are others) but don't forget to use the sunscreen for any part of the body that may get exposed to the sun.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.

I think over 6 months is okay...and I always have used California Baby. It's all natural. I look for no chemicals or toxins.

Hi S.,
Sunscreen is not only safe, it's necessary. I've always been a big advocate of using the most natural products I can find (i.e. California Baby SPF 30). Last year my dermatologist recommended that our whole family use Blue Lizard for Sensitive Skin. We have an allergy prone family and my toddler is very sensitive to fragrances and dyes, etc. She has responded well to this product and it's much cheaper than my favorite "natural" products. I can usually find Blue Lizard in my local (higher end) grocery store. (We shop at Wegman's.) Also, it really helps to get the little tykes used to hats and visors and to limit their sun exposure during the hottest times of the day. There's also swimsuits available at Target and L.L.Bean that cover their arms and upper bodies (looks like a surfer's wet suit top.) Good luck and don't forget sunscreen for you too!

You can use Water Babies, but that is very expensive. I use the "No Add" brand. It comes in spf 50. Works great on the kids and Dad(he burns the worst).

S.,

I agree with the other posts, just about any brand with UVA and UVB are a necessity. I like SPF45 or higher. I do find the Aveeno to be better for sensative skin, but the other are good too. Remember to reaply several times a day and after going in the water. Enjoy the summer.

Yes. Definitley use sunscreen and try to cover your baby up. Even in the shade you get effects from harmful sun rays - especially on the beach! We use Coppertone - water babies, the pink bottle. I know theres a lot of choices out there but we like the good old coppertone.

Personally I use Arbonne's Baby Care Sunscreen and my sons are in the pool several times a week as well as the playground, outside, and theme parks. They are always beautifully tanned and have NEVER burned with it. And yes, it is safe to use sunscreen on a baby over 6 months old. :)

BTW, my sons all have sensitive skin and have never had any trouble with the sunscreen.

I have a baby boy who is now not so much of a baby. We had many concerns about sunscreen as well. We did talk to the pediatrician and he recommended Aveeno. My son also has sensitive skin so this happened to work out wonderfully. There were other brands that we tried (Waterbabies, Jergens, and Coppertone) but they all gave him a rash. The Aveeno is a little more expensive than the other brands but it is well worth it. Good luck.

Yes, it's not only safe, it's imperative! Any brand with zinc oxide in it is good. Banana boat, coppertone, etc are great. I like getting at least an SPF of 30 with UVA/UVB blockers. Don't forget baby's ears, lips, & scalp.

Hi S.,

Yes - sunscreen is important. Go to cosmeticsdatabase.com and you can look up different body care products including sunscreen. Badger and California Baby are two of the least chemically laden. The regular ones at the stores are full of chemicals that are not good for babies - or us for that matter. Another key is to find one that protects against UVA and UVB rays or your little one is not protected.

At the same time - your little one needs a little sun exposure - no one shoot me! We all need it. Not much - maybe 5 minutes for your little one between the hours of 10-2 (maybe 15 minutes for adults - depending on where we live and skin type - darker skin needs more sun exposure and lighter needs less). But - that is how we get vitamin D - and we generally do not get enough from diet. Vitamin D at higher levels helps ward off many diseases and keeps us healthy.

Good luck - give the baby a little sun (don't forget sunscreen takes 15 - 30 minutes to start working after application - so don't just apply and stay out on really bad days or the baby will burn and of course - that's never good). And use a sunscreen that has the least chemicals and no fragrance if possible.

I would highly avoid many of the brands mentioned by other moms with the exception of California Baby. It is considered a SAFER sunscreen because micronized titanium dioxide which deflecks rays by resting on top of the skin rather that being absorbed. It is also fragrance, paraben and benzoate free (the other brands mentioned contain these and other dangerous ingrediants). I would also recommend getting a mineral powder sunscreen which can be dusted on the face and head. It is even safer than a cream, lasts longer and is sweat and waterproof. Eminence has a nice translucent powder (spf20) that comes in a travel brush which is very convenient.

Hi S.,

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this ... sunscreen is full of dangerous synthetic chemicals that are absorbed by our skin!

here are a couple articles:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2006/0...

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2004/0...

now, what CAN you do? In another article, Dr. Mercola talks about rubbing Brocolli on your skin. Couldn't find that particular article, but here is another one that mentions brocolli and the sun ...

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2007/1...

It is important to get sunlight each day with NO sunscreen ...

Warm Regards,
C.

Yes it is safe to use, I also used the Aveno Baby, but it's better to try and minimize baby's exposure to sun as much as possible. Even the best sunscreen in the world can't protect completely.
