Baby Sitting Rate

I am interviewing potential babysitters but am unsure what a reasonable rate would be. When I was growing up they would pay you like 20 bucks for an evening but of course times have changed any input would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to not be fair to the babysitter

What can I do next?

Golly I can’t wait to hear the answers to this one! My Niece charged me $10 an hour about a year ago...hence the fact it was a year ago as I cannot afford that! I have a Neighbor girl she’s a senior in High School who will come over and entertain him so I can do things like holiday cooking or wrapping or packing for vacation and she will charge me $10-$20 depending how long she is here but still that come out to about $2-$3 an hour.

My daughter is 13. She has first aid and a babysitting course from the Red Cross. She charges $7 a hour for one kid $10 an hour for 2 and "negotiable" after that. If she has to stay past midnight, she ups it to $15 an hour after 12.
Hope this helps.

Have you ever been to sittercity.com? You can put in your zip code and it will pull up all the people who babysit in your area and what they charge. That should give you a good idea of the going rates around you.

Wow! Times sure have changed. I guess this is why I've let my mom sit when we used to go out. When I used to sit I charged $3 per hour & nothing more; period (I'd also had CPR & B.A.T. training through the Red Cross as part of my Girl Scout training & I still have training). It kept me busy too. I guess I won't be hiring any sitters either since they cost too much. They make almost as much as I did 4 years ago when I was in collections. Kids these days don't do anything for the experience anymore. Seems like they're just greedy.

Depending on how many children are being watched I would say between $10 and $12 and hour. I actually pay my sitter who also happens to be my sister more. However discuss with the sitter and negitiate from there on what you can afford.

Good luck.
