Almost 10 Month Old Constantly Getting Sick

My 10 month old son has been sick on and off for the last several months. It all started with a stomach virus when he was 7 months. Maybe 2 weeks after that, he was feverish but it went away in 2 days. About 2 weeks after that, he had a cold which led to fever, sore throat and coughing. He coughed for 3 weeks and was put on antibiotics. The antibiotics ended a week ago and now he has a high fever AGAIN! We took him to doc who prescribed Acetaminophen, liquids and baths. She also tested for any infections and haven't found any. Thank God the fever has gone down within a day.

I realize kids get sick all the time. But is this unusual? Also, I am quite active with him. We're out almost everyday, but not necessarily with other kids, in playgrounds, at playrooms, libraries, adult functions, etc. Is this bad for him?

What can I do next?

I realize he isn't in daycare, but having him at all of the other functions is still exposing him to germs....

It could be that his immune system has been stressed with all of the different things he has had, so you might need to wait a bit and stay home to let him fully recover.

yes, unfortunately when kids are little and their immune system is developing they will get sick. My son sometimes gets sick and then gets sick again a month later. With him,we think it is related to allergies. I know it is nerve racking and upsets you. After he turns a year old he may stop getting sick every so often. You can not protect him from everything. Wash his hands or give him a bath after you have been out. Best of luck

I woud have him checked for allergies. My youngest DD was this way and she is allergic to cats and has asthma. Good luck we never like to see our little ones sick.

I have been in this same situation a few times--I nearly had the air in our home tested because I wondered if there was something in the air making them sick! Sounds crazy, but I was desperate. Now that your son's been on antibiotics, get him a good probiotic, which will build up his immune system naturally (because the antibiotics destroy both good AND bad bacteria, and your immune system depends upon the good ones!) After illness and meds this winter, I gave my kids a brand called Culterelle. Got it at the local health food store, but you can probably get it cheaper online, maybe at iherb.com? I like it because it's a powder form, so you just stir it into their drink--gave my kids juice and they couldn't taste the difference. Good luck to you. P.S. I have a friend in Australia who recently told me about something called Manuka honey---she said the good stuff can be expensive, but that it's great for colds, flu, etc. I am going to buy some for this winter, in preparation. Ugh.

The absolute best way to prevent catching illnesses is to wash him and your hands religiously! Before meals, after any excursion, etc. And dry them thoroughly after washing. Sleep and fluids will help boost his immune system as well. And fruit. Give him lots of blueberries! It's the perfect time of the year for them.
