Dear Mommas,

My LO all winter had a stuffed nose and occasional fever. Now that it is summer, he is still getting them, and the high fevers :( I know part of the reason is the air conditioner, but without it, he sweats a great deal and cannot sleep. a true Catch 22.

Any practical ideas for how to help my LO not get so many colds during the rest of the summer as well as Indian Summer, poor thing. Or how to counteract the a/c?

Thank you in advance for your good advice and wisdom.

Jilly

Hi Jilly,

The AC shouldn't bother him unless it is blowing right on him. Air can actually blow bacteria into an ear, etc and cause an infection....Have you thought about detoxing your home so his immune system would be stronger? My kids stopped getting sick (so my oldest's febrile seizures stopped as well) when I did. I'll be glad to walk you through what I did if you're interested.

Jilly, the air conditioner in your home can drive the humidity down pretty low, which may be contributing to your son's stuffy nose. There's nothing wrong with running a humidifier in his room to bring it back up to a reasonable level. And, the humidity during the winter is naturally low, so a humidifier will help then too.

But none of this explains why he's developing an occasional fever. Maybe he has allergies? I would think that would possibly cause some temperature elevation. Does his stuffiness seem worse when he's lying down in bed and seem to clear when he is up and about? If so, maybe he is allergic to dust mites and you need a cover for his mattress.

Perhaps considering both these ideas will help keep his sinuses in better shape and help keep him from contracting so many colds. Dunno.

Good luck!

There is a type of allergy medicine for little ones you can get if he has allergies, otherwise he could be teething and getting in his molars. My daughter would get symptoms like a cold when she was teething.

I disagree with Jennifer P. You cannot go by Dr. Sears or what websites say. You know your child. Mine gets fevers every other month or so. (Look up cyclic fevers or Neutropenia) I will not let it get out of control as he has had febrile seizures in the past. Anything over 101 for my son warrants ibuprofen. Every child is different. I would suggest having your house tested for mold. We did just to have piece of mind when we moved into our home which was 20 years old at the time.

How is his diet? See WestonPrice for diet info- really great.
Has he been on antibiotics- that always results in "colds" later.
Really good diet will end this-no sugar, no white flour, lots of live foods.
best, k

Hi,

Don't be so quick to blame the A/C... it is a little early but have him tested for allergies if you can. My daughter was sniffling sneezing and getting sick all spring - I took her to the allergist and she had no allergies, but what she did have was a sinus problem. Two weeks on Nasonex and she was breathing fine, no more stuffed / runny nose or snoring, and no more fevers (until today :( she just caught something).
