My 10 month old daughter is still primarily nursing and I have tried to introduce other foods but she has little interest. She will eat finger snack and mashed up fruits but she refuses anything that is not sweet like mixed veggies. I am concerned that when it's time to wean that I will have to just refuse her desire to nurse and I don't want to have to do that. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Things are going better. She has been eating more of a variety of foods and I think her biggest problem was that she wants to do it herself. Thanks you all for all of your advice and help.

You have to keep trying. I introduced my 9 month old to solids at 5 months. It was a CHORE!!! He would spit back almost every little bit of what little went into his mouth. It took several weeks and lots of messes, but it's SOOO important to get them used to different tastes and textures before they are one, or you'll end up with a VERY picky eater. Although breast milk or formula still makes up the majority of the calories they need, 10 months is too old to be solely on breast milk. Try making your own baby food! That's a great way to save money, and adjust the taste to your baby's liking.

Join the club!! My second baby was a great nurser in contrast to his older brother and when it came time to wean he wanted nothing to do with it. The best I could do is mix some cereal with breast milk to get him used to a new taste and then started mixing some of the other foods, like veggies, in with the cereal and water. It seemed to help but he really didn't start getting a perfectly balanced diet until he could eat solids but now he's just over 1 1/2 and he'll eat just about anything. Just keep at it 10 months is old enough that she likes things the way they are and may be reluctant to try anything new.

Try mixing your breastmilk and rice cereal in with some peas or other veggie. Then, decrease the amount of milk and cereal you mix in with the veggies. It takes them some time to get used to other foods, and since breastmilk is sweet, that is what they will prefer. That worked wonders for me!

I'm really not sure if this will you but I have a friend who told me that sometimes you have to introduce a new food to your child up to ten times or more before they decide that they actually like it. But for right not I agree with everyone else just keep trying and don't strees, she will eventually start eatting more and as long as she is gaining wieght and growing there really isn't much you have to worry about.

For the first year of my babies life we lived in Califorina where i got to attend this really neat place called parent's place where weekly we had meeting with child development speicalist while giving our kids socialization. the teacher in my daughters class had the following to say about introudciong solids and it allways made me feel better.

It is our job as the parent to offer a variety of foods it is the babies job to deiced, what, how much and when to eat.

Don't worry your baby will eat when it is right for him not you. My adivce would be to try to offer foods like sweat potatoes and finger veggies. Just keep trying eventually the baby will decide to eat!

My brother is a nutritionist with Johns Hopkins Medical Center and he told me that you have to introduce new foods to wee-ones up to 30 times before they will try it or consistently eat it. So just keep offering (not forcing, of course) new foods and eventually she'll try it. And as long as you're offering a nice, wide, healthy, variety of foods - you have no need to worry. Kiddos have the purest hunger cues, she knows when she is full and hungry better than we do. And you don't have to refuse nursing - La Leche League has great advice on that. Best of luck!

I agree to keep trying and trying but don't stress yourself out over it. She'll eventually start eating more foods.

I used to mix up veggies with applesauce to help them get used to it. My fav mixture was spinach with applesauce. Also try some sweeter veggies like sweet potatoes.

The other thing that is important at this stage is to allow her to start feeding herself and allow her to make a mess of it. Just dump mushy whatever on her tray and let her go at it.

You might also want to try something more savory like spaghetti squash with tomato sauce put through a food grinder.
