After School Care...Should I Hire a Nanny?

Hello! I will have a 1st grader (elementary) and a 5th grader (intermediate school) in the upcoming school year. My husband and I work full time and are unable to pick them up from school or the many after school activities offered. I feel bad that my kids are not able to participate in these activities because of our work schedule (8ish-5ish) and have been thinking about hiring an after school nanny or babysitter that can pick one up from school and the other up after whatever after school activity they may have. This last school year we...

After School Care Ideas?

Hi Mamas! I work full time and my kids are too old for “day care” and now involved in after school activities such as club swim. My parents have been helping me out with transporting my kids to various activities after school for a couple of years. However, they are aging and need to start looking at other options. I have posted a job on Sitter City for a babysitter to help me out for a couple hours a day in the afternoon. However, I have not had much luck with responses. Additionally, I have tried looking at carpooling options; but...

Unmotivated 16 Year Old

My 16 year old daughter is very smart, but is very unmotivated to complete her school work, therefor seems to be running a C average in almost everything. I speak to her teachers who say she 'drifts off' in class. She often gets zeros for homework she 'does not feel like doing'. I realize a C average is not the end of the world, but I know she is capable of more and would like her to be able to go to college. I have taken away privliges, offered incentives, etc, and she says she will do better, and may for a very short time, then its back...

Help with Highly Gifted Child

My 9-year-old daughter has been tested and classified as Highly Gifted (HG). Her IQ is 150+, but her behavior at school is terrible. I'm told this is normal for HG kids, but her problems at school are getting so bad that I don't know what to do. We can't homeschool and the private schools that meet her intellectual needs won't meet her emotional ones. Are any other mamas going through the same thing? My husband and I feel so alone in this.

To Homeschool or Not to Homeschool

My seven year old has recently started requesting to be homeschooled. She is a great kid but complains that she does not have any friends at school. I have talked to her teacher and basically her problem is that she is very well behaved and has her own solid ideas. She would rather play by herself than do something she knows is wrong or something she doesn't want to do. I am so proud of her for not doing something just because everyone else is doing it. It does create problems for her though with other students. My question is what are...

Pre K Vs. K

My son just turned 4 in December, and should be going to Pre-K this fall. However, the preschool that he attends uses a very good curriculum that teaches the 4 year olds the same things they learn in Pre-K. My son is very smart and he catches on really fast. I am afraid that if i sent him to Pre-K in the fall he will be bored because he would already know everything that they will be doing. I feel that it would be better to seek out a private school that will test him and allow him to go to Kindergarten instead. My husband thinks that he...

16 Year Old Daughter

My daughter has just turned 16 in September. She is for the most part a good kid. She has her head on straight (most of the time), but loves to give me a hard time. It feels like I have lost all controll of things when it comes to her. She no longer has the respect for me she once did, and can be very disrespectful, and quite mean and hurtful. She is a sophmore in college prep highschool wich is 2 hours away from home. Last year she could not wait to go, Her brother is a senior at another high school prep school, Now this year she...

Seeking Advice for Out of Control 16 Year Old

I am seeking advice for a 16 year old who is out of control. A little bit about our sitation - I am 31 single female (no kids)with a 16 year old sister. Our mother died over 14 years ago, so she was raised primarily by our father. Out of pity for my youngest sister, he let her grow up doing whatever she wanted - no disipline whatsoever. In total, my father father has 4 kids - we are all from the same 2 parents. During these past years, ny father did not want us coming around or trying to disipline the youngest. Now at 16, she is beyond...
