Should a 6 Year Old Get Ready for School Without Reminders...

I have a 6 year old boy.. and a 7 year old girl. I work part time and have a nanny come to my house to watch the kids get them breakfast and drive them to school. Today nanny called me. She said she thought the kids were big enough to get themselves ready for school without constant reminders. She said she had a talk with them today and told them that since they were big now.. she should not have to tell them to get dressed to put their pjs away and to brush teeth and hair... etc... they should just know the routine and do it.. ...

Need Reassurance About After School Care

I am going back to work after several years at home and my child (age 10) will be going to after school care. It is on-site at his school. We love the school, and we know the teachers and they are wonderful. Even with that said, it is an emotional decision. He is an only child so I think it will be nice for him to be with friends, but my heart hurts when I think about not being there to pick him up right away when school lets out. To be candid, I also wonder whether SAHMs secretly judge moms whose kids are in after-care (I know that is my...

9-Year-old Asking About Sex

My daughter has asked me what the word sex means and what sex is. She is 9. I explained to her that some questions are very difficult to answer and that I would like some time to think about it so I answer it the best way I can. She accepted that but I feel I need to give her an answer soon. Any suggestions? How much should a 9-year-old know? It's obvious someone, probably a kid at school, has used the word or talked about it. Otherwise she wouldn't be asking. I do realize she could have also gotten it from TV. We have already talked about...

Seeking "Gifted and Talented" Preschool and Playgroups

My daughter Alex's preschool teacher has informed me that while she'd love to keep her in her class, she felt like Alex belonged in a gifted program. She's not quite 3 years old and already writes her name, is close to reading (at a very basic level; putting letter sounds together, etc. and typing words on her computer), and just in general functions more at a 4-5 year old place. Is anyone aware of "gifted and talented" preschool programs in Colorado? We live in the Castle Rock/Parker area (about 30 minutes south of Denver), so close to...

Why Do You Homeschool?

I wanted to ask all the Homeschool Moms why they decided to homeschool. Was it for a specific reason or reasons? How long have you been homeschooling? How long do you plan on doing it for? How old are your children? At what age did you start? Is it a struggle? How did you choose your curriculum? Do you belong to a co-op? If your reason is somewhat controversial or you don't want to offend anyone please PM me as I am looking for truthful answers. Thanks

Ready for Kindergarten

My daughter is 4 years old and has a September birthday. She has been going to a preschool for two years now and is in the fours class. I recently had a review with her teacher and she recommended pre-k. She agreed that my child is very smart, but she is also shy. She felt that my child was not ready for Kindergarten because of that and that she is not a leader, her confidence level is low and is not into the other things the other girls are into like Hanna Montana and High School Musical. Personally I don't think that has anything to do...

Pre-K Or Not?

I keep getting "advice" by, I'm sure, well-meaning friends of mine, but now they've planted worries into my head. I'd like to hear from anonymous mothers and folks like you who've been through this....OR maybe there's a K teacher on here who could offer some friendly advice. My son is 4 (Oct 25 bday) and will be 5 next Oct. He's very smart for his age, loves to learn. He's always spelling words on the street when we walk, in the car, on the TV. In the last 3 months he's sounding out the words and reading. He's reading! I'm so very...

Help with Kindergarten Readiness

After my daughter was in daycare from 3 months to almost 3 years, my husband and I decided to become a one working parent family. I am now a stay at home mom, have been for about a year. My daughter isn't going to go to Pre-K. She is very smart, recognizes all of her ABC's, can say them, can count to 15 and can count backwards from 10. She can also write all of her ABC's (in capitals) and we are working on her writing her numbers. She knows all her colors and shapes, she can cut with scissors (but she cna't really cut anything that makes...

Help-my 8 Year Old Is Very Picky About Her Food.

I have an 8 year old that is very picky about food. She either wants something different from what i've made and if not, she won't eat. I can't get her to eat veggies or healthy food. It all started one day that we were at my in laws house, and she almost vomited, ever since then, she is always saying that if she tries something new she's going to throw up. I've tried telling her to try something first, before saying she doesn't like it, I've tried the mother and daughter cook day, where we make somthing together, i've tried to hide the...
