My son has a drawer full of 'keepsake' items - most of which he no longer remembers about (things from elementary school and younger).
There's only so much baggage a person needs to 'keep' forever.
Don't discard the gift card idea so quickly.
If you must get a specific thing - how about a theme USB drive with the event name/date on the side?

Lilly,

It would help if you told us WHAT the even was. If it's for more than ONE teen (are you buying 5 different gifts?)

This place has "geek" gifts under $10

Water bottle is my go-to idea lately. I wash them at home, then give them out at the beginning of the event so that the kids can use them, and then they take the bottles home.

It sounds like you are working with a team of some sort.

My past experience is with cheerleaders where they received gift bags at different times of the year. Granted, ,these were most always over $10 each but here goes...

soft blanket with name embroidered on it as well as mascot insignia
tote bag
jersey with graduating year and name on back
water bottle covers with names
scarf with name
jackets with name
cosmetic bag
headbands
hair ties

I hope that helps a little.

Also, with my company I go to shows, etc and vendors give out gifts what are really cool such as :

high power small flashlight for your purse
stress balls in cute shapes
luggage tags
etc

My kids are on teams where at end of year they are given something as a keepsake. Popular items have been the waiter bottles (personalized in some way - they have their team name on it), mugs were really popular. They had the team name on it and their jersey number. Typically my kids keep their number from year to year, so they actually still use the mugs.
Other ideas - a photo? Or a little plaque made up (my kids have these on display), but I think keychain (assuming it ties into whatever this involves) sounds good too. I like tee shirt idea also. My kids do wear tees they've received.

How about a theme tee-shirt? As B says below, there are very few "keepsakes" that don't become clutter. At least a tee could be worn to the gym for years to come. (There are a few sites online that will print tees in bulk.) A theme mug could be good too, if these teens are headed to college soon and could use it in a dorm room.

My kids liked those lanyard/neck keychain things (not sure what they are called). We always had a few laying around for different events that they participated in and they came in handy. Even in college, my kids used them for their dorm keys.
