Unmotivated 16 Year Old

My 16 year old daughter is very smart, but is very unmotivated to complete her school work, therefor seems to be running a C average in almost everything. I speak to her teachers who say she 'drifts off' in class. She often gets zeros for homework she 'does not feel like doing'. I realize a C average is not the end of the world, but I know she is capable of more and would like her to be able to go to college. I have taken away privliges, offered incentives, etc, and she says she will do better, and may for a very short time, then its back...

What Life Skills Do You Teach Your Teen?

OK, this might sound weird, but what needs to be taught to my teen such as laundry, banking, etc? She seems to be totally clueless about basic things related to cooking, home management, etc. Can parents of teens tell me what they have intentionally or unintentionally taught their teen for self sufficency? Also, if you know of any books or programs that would be great. I hope this makes sense. Follow up; I am not talking about anything to do with respecting others or manners. I am talking about actually knowing how to do tasks that...

My Daughter Wants a Guinea Pig. Should I Let Her?

My 13 year old daughter wants a guinea pig for Christmas this year. We already have a cat and she feeds him and changes his litter every day.I know I will have to take care of some of the guinea pig's needs but i will encourage her to do as much as she can. My daughter loves animals and in fact wants to be a vet. She even typed up a reaserch paper on guinea pigs to prove to me she knew what she was doing. Should I let her have her guinea pig?

Help Buying a House with a Living Room and Family.. How to Furnish??

Our current house has a living room only. We are looking at bigger homes that have the traditional colonial floor plan. living room, family room and dining room kitchen.. I am puzzled with what to do with all of those rooms.. I think buying an extra living room set and an extra dining set would be a waste of money.. No one uses the living room for entertaining.. it is awaste..Any other ideas on what to do with this space>> maybe have the traditional living room with the couch and TV.. and the family room as a playroom with toys? ...

17 Year Old Daughter Always over at Her Boyfriend's House

So my 17 year old daughter is a senior in high school, straight A student, 4.02 GPA, has part time job, car which she bought with her own money, pays her car insurance and her portion of the cell phone bill. My concern is this, she has a boyfriend who is a sophomore and she is constantly over at his house. I always make sure she does her chores and her homework is done before she goes but it seems she spends more time with him and his family (two parent household) having dinner there, going to church with them, she even tried to ditch...

16 Year Old Daughter - Moved Out

About a month ago, my 16 Year old daughter moved out. One night, during an argument she called her father who I've been divorced from since she was about 2 to pick her up. HE DID. He felt that he was helping his daughter. So for the past month or so.. she's been at her father's house. I feel betrayed by both my daughter and ex-husband. He had never asked for more time before and yet he's decided that it's ok for my 16 year old daughter to "decide" where she will be living. I don't understand why he didn't back me up and tell her...

18 Year Old High School Senior Curfew and House Rules

My 17 year daughter turns 18 next week. Wanted some input on what her curfew should be for school nights and weekends. She currently works part-time and is responsible with her job and school work. She had talked earlier this year about moving out and getting an apartment with her boyfriend (same age, same high school). We told her that if that was her choice, we wanted her to understand that we keep the car (we pay for insurance) and she would be on her own for college. That talk ended quickly, but not quietly. So, we can only...

Social Groups for 17 Year Old

Hi Moms, I need to find a place where my child can socialize without fear of her peers using drugs and alcohol. It seems to me that all her friends are into experimenting with drugs these days and she doesn't want to be involved with it. Unfortunately, in her social circle it's all around her. I suggested she go meet new friends, but at the tender age of 17, it's not so easy to do. Does anyone out there know of a very friendly, welcoming group that deals with this type of situation or other groups that socialize and discuss situations like...

Question for Moms over 40 - What's Your Biggest Organizing Problem?

If you're a mom over 40, what do you find to be your biggest organizing challenge? Too much clutter? Balancing time with work and family? Finding room for your hobbies? Dealing with memorabilia, kid's things you want to keep? I would love to hear what your biggest dilemmas are! ETA - I asked for "over 40" for an article I'm working on. 20 yr old moms have different organizing needs than 50 yr old moms with teenagers or kids out of the house. Thus, the age question.
