Winter Baby

This question might be a bit silly but winter is approaching and I find I have no idea what should I do with my baby in the winter. I have a 3 year old who is already pining to play in the snow. The baby will be under one for the entire winter (ie. unable to walk, probably able to crawl). Do I just bundle her up and plunk her in a snow bank while we build a snowman? It will be dark by the time my husband gets home so all our fun will have to be throughout the day. The baby does not nap consistently and when she does it is usually not more than 30 minutes. By the time I get the 3 year old and myself bundled up the baby will probably be awake and totally unwilling to play by herself while we go outside. I have a moby wrap that I guess I could try but I don't know if it will fit over all the winter layers. It gets COLD here. What have you done with your babies in the winter?

What can I do next?

Yes bundle her up and take her out on a sled in the yard. Also, don't under estimate the power of play after dark. The first winter with my daughter (she was about 6mo old) my son was 2.5 yrs old. We would play after dinner outside like around 6pm when hubby could watch the baby. My son loved playing in the snow in the dark. We live in town so there are street lights and we have a porch light, so it's not totally dark plus when there is snow on the ground it seems lighter outside. We would lie in a snow pile and stare up at the stars! I would also make little trips outside with the baby during the week, but it was hardly worth getting all bundled up for 30 min of play! And we would make sure to play outside at least one big time during the weekend when dad was home. Have fun!!!

You can buy a sled for the baby and you and your 3 year old can pull your little one around. Below is the link to one like the one we used to use. We live 1/2 mile of our school and on snowy mornings I would bundle my youngest up and put him in the sled and walk the big kids to school.

My baby (turning 2 this week) was 12-15 mos last winter and our nanny put him in his snow suit and the boots I had for him and plunked him in the snow and built snowmen and snow forts with his sister (17 mos older than he is so she was 2.5 yrs at the time). He liked it. He was sufficiently bundled in the snowsuit, mittens, boots, etc. and they didn't stay out for huge chunks of time but better than having a stir crazy 3 year old who is chomping at the bit all day to go out and play :) If you don't want the baby sitting in the snow, prop a snow saucer or something so the baby's butt is on that and leaning against a snow pile though it didn't seem to bother my little one. Though he walked at 9 mos, he sure COULD NOT get around in that snowsuit and boots :)

We don't have snow very often, but when my son was 6 months old, I bundled him up w/ layers and a hat and sat him on a quilt in the grass with lots of toys w/in reach while I worked outside.

I think the idea of putting baby in a stroller to watch you play in the snow is a great idea. The moby thing should be fine. You may have to wear your husbands oversized coat on TOP of baby in the moby.

That - or try to go outside while baby's sleeping but 3 yr old is awake.

Love the JJ Cole Bundle Me. Toddler size might be good for your baby if he around 6 months as it sounds.

I have been where you are I usually pu the baby in the stroller to protect from the wind and stay out for about 30 mins. I dress myself first except for my coat ( boots and snowpants for myself too)then get the big kid ready put him/her out then zip up the baby wrap in thick blanket pop in the stroller or in a sled on porch build snow man come in have lunch do again in the afternoon have fun this winter!
