What Should I Give My Baby and Toddler for Breakfast?

Dear Mamasource's moms,

I have an almost 10 months old baby and a 2 yearsold toddler (with egg allergy). I've been giving the 10 months old oatmeal with 4 oz of milk the past week or two! And the 2 yearsold has been eating very little and no nutrition breakfast like a toast or frozen waffle (no egg ingredient) with 2 sips of milk. I wonder if you can share your breakfast menu. Any input will be greatly appreciate!

What can I do next?

If you can find someone who raises turkeys, you can feed them those eggs. Chicken and turkey eggs are different. They don't have the same contents. Try the local FFA,4-H, or Ag in the schools. Let them know your situation and they will find someone for you. Any other questions, you can email my friend or I.

I have a 3 yr old and 2 yr old who do not like your typical breakfast foods. Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day so i just let them eat whatever they want as long as its not junk food. Sometimes they eat cheese sticks and pretzels for breakfast, or goldfish and cheese, or yogurt with sprinkles. Whatever they will eat I let them. Just because its morning doesn't mean they have to eat a typical morning food.

I hope I helped some.

Have a blessed day!

P.,
We do lots of fruit around here...not just in the morning, but all day long. If they seem particularly uninterested one morning, then I puree the fruits (food processor), add some yogurt and ice and call it a smoothie :-) Sowmehow it seems to taste better if it comes through a straw! :-) Beyond that, my 4yr old likes adding rice chex or some of her kashi cereal to her yogurt. Or dipping her fruit in her yogurt. Anything that involves "dip" seems to go over better.

At my house we limit processed food so we don't eat any box cereals. We also don't eat sugar, wheat or milk(cow) either. So our breakfasts are corn grits (slow cooked), brown rice w/frozen fruit, (I sometimes add coconut milk, coconut and/or nuts, honey as well.) I also make steel cut oats and it can be flavored in a variety of ways--cut up apples, bananas, raisins, cinnamon, honey. Instead of water, I sometimes make it in the crock pot and put apple juice. It tastes SUPER yummy and it is sweet enough w/o needing any other sweetner! If you want the recipe, just contact me and I will send it to you.

My daughter was a huge oatmeal fan, so she ate that solely for breakfast until she was over 1 year. Over the past year, she has eaten yogurt (natural), apple sauce, oatmeal, cereal and waffles. Waffles are somewhat new...I don't feel I can tell her no as I eat them going out the door. We do put 1/2 Tb PB on waffles for protein. She is now 2 1/2, so we really let her choose as long as it is acceptable

My 3 yo son goes through that periodically, his twin sister eats anything that doesn't eat her first.

I spoke with a nutritionist when he was younger as I was worried as my kids tend to be small to begin with (3 yo's are barely over 25 lbs! and still wear 2T), they said not to worry as they will eventially get the nutrion their body needs over the course of a week, just to continue making things and offering because eventuall they will take it. As for my kids if they skimp on breakfast foods, I try to offer more snack through the morning..

Maybe and hour later i will offer some fruit, then a bit after that something with peanut butter or other protein they might find interesting, but in smaller snack size amounts. etc. If they don't eat all of their snack I don't worry about it too much as it will mean they will still be hungry at lunch time.

I hope this helps. I would take the mom up on her offer for the oatmeal recipe...Sometimes doing things like that will be your only way to get a larger variety into your kid's diet (i.e. my son refuses to eat most vegetables - though, thanks to blue's clues he now eats carrots - so i sneak a couple of vegetable servings in by offereing him the new V8 juice options that are mixed with fruit juice and you can't taste the veggies! 1 glass is 1 serving of fruits and 1 serving of veggies!)

Good Luck!!! ;-)
