What Kind of Music Does Your Child Listen To?

Hi Moms,

My soon to be 7 year old son has just discovered the Black Eyed Peas. It started with the RIO movie and he liked the songs with W.I.L.IAM (which are very cute). So I started playing some Black Eyed Peas for him (I chose the songs - Pump it, I gotta feeling etc.). He is starting to get into listening to music on his own (previously we played music for him ... Beatles .. kind of old stuff). What musical groups do your kids listen to and how do you monitor content etc?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you Mama's - I really like the variety of music you and your kids listen to. I think I should at least widen my son's exposure to more genre's of music. You have given me some great ideas. I don't like the idea of limiting my son's preferences for music (my parents didn't do that to me when I was growing up and some of the music wasn't considered the most wholesome at the time) however my son is almost 7 and I will be keeping an ear for clean versions of songs. Thanks.

My 7 year old's favorite band is Linkin Park, he also like Green Day. My 4 year old daughter's favorite artist is Taylor Swift. She also likes any other "girl" band like Pink & Avril Lavigne.

Most of the music they like or listen to is music either me or my husband like and know. So we know what they say in the songs.

My 6 yo is into Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ziggy Marley, Cindy Lauper, the Go Gos, Free to Be You and Me CD (remember that one?? not sure your age :)

I hate having to monitor my own music, but when my daughter started singing Amy Winehouse's Rehab song, I relegated that to my drive to work, lol

My 3 year old was obsessed with Arcade Fire for 6 straight months, and I did not complain. She loves the Flaming Lips, and asks to see their concert footage all the time. Again, no complaints! She has awesome taste, I must say. She also likes watching The Last Waltz (which features The Band), Bob Dylan concert footage, The Lilith Fair (Sarah McLaughlin & friends), and The Concert for Bangladesh (George Harrison & friends). So I guess she appreciates the old classics and some more contemporary & experimental rock as well.
SHe has seen all of the old Muppet Shows including the old musical performances. That show alone was helpful in introducing her to different types of music, although Alice Cooper was a bit too scary for her! We love music in our house and Pandora is always on. I haven't had to worry about monitoring content yet because the stuff we listen to is pretty benign.

What I listen to - all edited of course. But they listen to the "popular" and new music of today, just like my husband and I do. They also listen to pretty much everything in the world beause my husband DJ's and depending on the event depends on which types of music he plays.

My daughter loves to go on U Tube and watch all the kids sing the popular songs. There are some really talented little kids out there! She LOVES Taylor Swift, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and of course Justin Bieber. I never let her watch the original videos.

Yes, my son fell in love with his first Black Eyed Peas song while watching G-Force at the theater. He jumped up and started dancing. At 3, he was pretty darn cute......moms behind me were giggling (the movie was over, the music was playing while credits were rolling). I get online and get the child friendly, censored versions of some of that stuff.
He's 4 so we play a lot of Laurie Berkner and similar music. But we play a good mix of everything (literally, everything....except tejano or polka, because they just get on my nerves). We play world beat, celtic, praise and worship, classical, specially chosen hip hop (not bad words or bad messages), rock, classic rock, oldies, funk, doo wop, ska, pop-punk, raggae, dixie, swing, country, new orleans style jazz, zydeco, OLD gospel, we listen to a lot. Music plays most of the day. We have a couple instrumental CDs (prayers/worship, some mozart adagios) as they go to bed. They are young. I do monitor content. Not so much "words" or styles, but content.
