I read some bad baby books and some great baby books but now that we are past one year, I love some reccomendations on toddler growth and development, and how to raise a well behaved child instead of the little hellion he's turning into :>)

Here are a couple of alternative to some of the more controlling methods in other books mentioned (I know the Lisa Welchell book recomends hot sauce on the toungue and that's just abusive!!).

I like Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Khon, Playful Parenting by Lawrence Cohen and 1,2,3 The Toddler Years by Irene Van der Zande.

My husband and I recently purchased What to Expect: The Toddler Years. It has really helped me to understand why my sweet little angel has become the person she has and allows us to work well in behavior encouragement and modification.

We have used and are continuing to use the Baby Wise books. It worked so well for us while our daughter was an infant and we're using the second book in the series for her now that she's just turned one. Hope this helps!

Hi H.:

I can't tell you for sure if it's these books, or just my son's demeanor, but I have read and referred back many times to all of the "Wise" books. Starting with Baby Wise, I am now on Toddler Wise. They are written by Dr. Gary Ezzo and Dr. Robert Bucknam. I highly recommend them.

As with all books, you have to use your best judgement to decide how best to integrate the information into your life. Pick and chose what makes sense to you. That is what I have done since my son's birth 2 years ago. Certainly he has still had phases that were tough to deal with, but they have been short-lived and he's just a calm, gentle and friendly boy.

I wish you all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi H.,

"The Strong Willed Child" is by James Dobson. I would also recommend "Temper Your Child's Tantrums" and Dare To Discipline" both also by Dobson. There is a great book by Lisa Welchel called "Creative Correction" that I would HIGHLY recommend. May God bless your efforts to discipline and train your child. So many parents simply let their children grow up, when in reality, it's our job to RAISE them to productive adulthood...anything else is irresponsible. Hats off to ya!

I have been a mother for a number of years. I have an 11 and a half year old, 6 and 3/4, 2 and 3/4 and an almost 6 month old!

I cannot give you a better recommendation than this:

Parenting With Dignity
Parenting With Dignity the Early Years

What I love about this is that the approach begins with what you want, not what you don't want. PlEASE look into this for an approach that goes beyond crisis management, and teaches you how to teach your child what you want them to learn before it's an issue. Your child will feel secure and you will feel great knowing that you are teaching your child to make good decisions about his behavior.

You will not have to desperately try all of the punishment methods that people end up resorting to because they don't know what else to do.

Please look into it. You'll be glad you did!

H.,
I took a parenting seminar at my son's school and it was the best thing I ever did for me and my kiddies. The course was based on the parenting techniques called Love and Logic. The primary focus is on raising respectful and responsible kids and not going crazy yourself in the meantime. Please go to their website and peruse through their book selections. www.LoveAndLogic.com They do have one specifically for raising toddlers and I have it and would recommend it. In fact, I think it's time for me to re-read it!

Good luck! ~ K.

I've never read this myself, but my mom and others have recommended it to me. It is called The Strong Willed Child. I'm sorry, but I don't recall the author's name. But, like I said it has been recommended to me by quite a few people.
Good luck with everything, I have a 4 yr old boy so I know how it can all be!!
