my son will be 20 months on thurs... is that too early for 2-year molars? i'm just wondering because he had a runny nose yesterday and was up 5 times last night crying and up at 5 this morning... i don't see or feel anything behind his 1-year molars, but he's feeling fine right now and doesn't seem or look sick so i thought maybe teething? any of your kids start w/their 2-year molars this early?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I am a Dental Assistant and just wanted to let you know that your son is not too young. All the teething guidelines are generally plus or minus 6 months. How has the rest of his teething been?did the others come in early as well? If he started teething early with all of his teeth this is now your "guideline" for him, more than likely he will be early with all of his teeth...so expect his 6 yr molars early as well..:) .It is okay and it is very common! Good luck and dont forget he may also get a low grade fever too.

My oldest had his 2 year molars fully in by 20 months and one of my 21 month old twins seems to be starting to get his. I also don't see or feel them yet, but he's showing all the teething signs. So yes, it's very possible that he's getting his 2 year molars.

My daughter (21mo) just got in her 3/4 2 year old molars. And, I just happened to realize it when I had her upside down for fun. It was astonishing to see how big they were! I didn't have any indication though besides her being a little fussy during naps. Otherwise, yes, I guess they can get them before two. Try the teething tablets (hylands) thatt helps out my daughter a lot!

My son is 2 and now has entered the final stages of teething. But, at 20 mos. he had already begun to get the two year molars on the bottom and now the uppers are following. My Pediatric Dentist, said no kid is the same and that her youngest didn't get any molars until she was 18 months old. So, just keep the ice chips on hand and my son does really well with the Hyland's Teething Tablets and a dose of Motrin before bedtime so he can make through the nights when I notice he's doing a lot of grinding or not eating as much as he usually does.

So not too early. My son got his 2 yr molars at 15 months. He only had 6 other teeth. These things come in whenever they want. And they hurt. They are the only teeth that woke Luka up. Each molar was about 2 nights of hell. :)

I've learned through my daycare that at 20 months kids teeth like crazy. So far, I've had 5 kids teeth at 20 months. Put those teething toys in the fidge to be ready and keep some oral gel on hand too. I wouldn't trust him to look sick, I can always tell because they start to eat and sleep less.

Good luck!
