Too Much Formula? Daycare?

Help! I'm a single mom of my first child, a beautiful 7 week old boy. I'm still on maternity leave and plan to go back to work after the first if the year. I have a couple of concerns: first, I still have not chosen a daycare, does anyone know of any good daycares in the Blue Springs area? I would rather choose one that someone has referred to me. Second, I'm worried that my baby may be eating too much. Since this is my first child, everything's like a guessing game for me. I nursed for the first three weeks, and then switched him over to formula. I found a formula that works well for him and in that dept. things are fine, however, he is eating up to 6 ounces now, and for a 7 week old that just sounds like a lot to me, but, that's what he wants. I kept a log from noon yesterday until noon today, and in that 24 hr. period, he drank 44 ounces averaging every 3 hours. Is that too much and what should I do? If I start cutting him back he'll be fussy because he's still hungry. Three weeksago he weighed 9 pounds, and this week he weighs 12. Please someone have some advice! What if next month he wants 8 ounces and he won't even be on solids by then? Should I supplement with a little water in between feedings? Unfortunately, I don't have a real good pediatrician and the nurse never calls me back. Does anyone know of a good pediatrician?

What can I do next?

S., my son's pediatrician is THE BEST!!! He is at Children's Mercy. His name is Scott Colliton. The number is ###-###-####. I highly recommend him. My son had a lot of problems with his first ped. (birth to 1.5) and Dr. Colliton has been wonderful ever since we found him. My son is now 15, if that tells you anything. Good luck!!!

My 10 month old has been going to St John La Lande in Blue Springs since she was 12 weeks. We have been extremely pleased with the care and concern of the nursery staff and the director. The nursery staff have both been there over 10 years (closer to 20 I think). They LOVE those babies so much, which makes it a little easier to leave her there. It has the feel of an in-home daycare too. My other daughter has been there for almost a year (she started with she was 2 now she's 3), and we have been impressed with both her teachers. She has grown so much in the short amount of time she has been there.
I know they usually have a waiting list, but I'd definitely look into St John's, it is worth it :-)
Also, we use Dr Mark Mozer at Crockrell & McIntosh. And, we LOVE him :-)
Good Luck!!!

I have the BEST pediatrician's office! Lee's Summit Physician's Group or Raintree Pediatrics (they're 2 branches of the same office). They have urgent care hours EVERY SINGLE DAY of the week. They also have telephone advice nurses whose only job is to answer questions over the phone (during office hours). If you really need to talk to the Dr. on call after hours, it's only a $10 charge. As a new mother, you will soon see how wonderful these things are. I recommend these offices every chance I get. Our favorite doctor is Dr. Alison Henschel, who is at the Raintree office. She really takes time to connect with our girls and talk to us before she examines them. The other doctors we have seen have all been very nice, but she's our favorite. Their website is lsphysicians.com. You will be doing yourself a BIG favor if you check them out. Good luck with everything!
PS-- I'd move fast on the daycare thing. You often have to be on a waiting list for a while with an infant.

I wanted to let you know that I would be interested in watching your 7 week old boy when you decide to go back to work. I live in Blue Springs. If you have any questions for me please email me at ____@____.com also I go to Cockrell & McIntosh for my Pediatrician. I have never had any problems with them not calling me back. I usually see Stacey Sharpe or Michelle Roach. They both are really good. You might want to give them a try. They are also in Blue Springs. Hope this info helps you out.

First of all congratulations on the new baby! It is very exciting. 2nd what kind of daycare are you looking for? Center? In-home? That is your first really big decision. I babysit a little girl at my home and it works great for her mom but some prefer the center setting. If you are looking for in-home you want to find someone who doesn't have tons of children. I know for me I always keep under 4 including my daughter. Right now I just have one because a family of mine moved and I didn't fill the position with the holidays being here. I have heard of some of them having 10 kids. I can not imagine having that many. You can search on craigslist for an in home daycare. There is a website for childcare in blue springs that refers some but I can't think about it off the top of my head. I will message you when I do.

As far as formula. I would not worry that he is eating too much. As long as he isn't extremly overweight for his age, I wouldn't worry. My doctor always told me to feed on demand. He may be growing and just need the extra food. I can not remember how much my daughter was eating in the beginning but like I said my doctor said feed on demand and for me that seemed to be every 4 hours. I never supplemented water. So I don't know about that but, that is something you can ask your doctor about.

As far as pediatrician. I would recommend Cockrell Mcintosh, they are located in St. Mary's in blue springs. That is where I take my daughter and I love it. We see Dr. Roach and she is very nice. I love how the doctors there interact with the children and are there to answer questions. They also have urgent care in the evenings and on weekends. I could not say enough nice things about them.

Hi S.,
Congrats on your new little one! Mine is 5 months and I will tell you the book "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" changed my life!!!! It may be that your baby is fussy/crying when tired or overstimulated not just hungry. The book helps you to put your baby on an eat/activity/sleep schedule and helps you to recognize what their different cries mean. I thought some of the suggestions were nuts until I tried them and they worked! I was also able to get my son sleeping through the night at 10 weeks. My son is also big for his age and was drinking a lot of formula in a day--However 44 oz is a lot in my experience!! There is also a baby whisperer web site with help from other moms who use the methods!!!! Hope this is helpful--Good Luck!

S.,

Congrats on the new baby. As a new parent myself (5 1/2 month old), I totally understand your concerns. I always ask myself if my little guy is drinking enough. But he is growing and his peditrican isnt worried. He is only drinking about 30 ounces of formula a day. I just think some babies have more of an appetite than others.

I struggled with the daycare question too. I came to the decision that he was just too young for a daycare. I just dont feel they get the one on one attention they need at such a young age at a daycare center. I opted for a home "daycare". The lady that watches my son is wonderful and right now she only has my son. I feel really good about leaving him every day with her cause I know that she keeps a good eye on him and doesnt hestiate to call if he is acting differently one day or whatever. Its a big decision and I am sure you will make the one that is right for you guys. We also live in Blue Springs, if you would like I can give you her name and number if you want to call and talk to her.

I take the baby to Pediatric Associates in Lees Summitt. If he is sick I usually dont have any trouble getting him in that day to see the doctor. And everytime I have called about something, the are really good about calling me back. Overall I have been really happy with the doctors there. My son sees Dr. Kasper there.

Good Luck!

S.,
All my girls were able to eat 8 ounces before they even left the hospital. I did both breast and bottle so that I wouldn't get stuck breastfeeding if they took to that too well. The doctors all told me that I was feeding my girls too much and that they would have weight issues. 3 of them never went through a chubby phase. One of them definitely went through a FAT phase. She was huge fat! But she walked it right off as soon as she became active and she has been thin and athletic ever since. She's 20 now and still dropdead georgeous.

I have a daycare child that ate like that too. He is 2 now and very average in size and not the least bit chunky at all.

Hi S.,
I don't know if I can help you with the formula thing or not. Have you fallen into the habit of giving him a bottle every time he fusses? Babies fuss because they need something, he may just want to be held, or he may need a diaper change, or he's tired, lonely, or sometimes he just needs to suck for security. Maybe too hot? Too cold? If you have gotten into the habit of just giving him a bottle at every whim, then that is what might have become his 'comfort' thing. Have you tried to just give him a binky for the need of sucking?
As for the daycare, I live in a nice neighborhood off AA hwy and Adams Dairy in Blue Springs. The lady across the street does in home day care in her house. She has turned just the basement into a care facility complete with play ground, kitchen, bathroom...during business hours, she is strictly in her daycare area without every going upstairs for anything. She even has a seperate entrance. She is completely state licensed and has been doing this for over 12 years. She follows rules to the T for her business. The busdriver here has known her for the past 12 years as well, as she has gotten the elementary kids on and off the bus for that long too and it seems almost all of the staff at the elementary school here knows Ms. Patty very well. She does not just do daycare...she does preschool. Even the 13 month old there gets to sit down for school time and listen and learn. She is great and everyone in this neighborhood has used her I think. And she just had a security alarm installed to keep it ever safer! LOL. She recentely just had 2 or 3 openings come available and needs to fill them as quickly as possible. I have never posted on here before so I don't know how I can see your response but if you are interested in meeting her or interviewing her, I'd love to give you her info. You can contact me back at ____@____.com
Good Luck S.!
Merry Christmas and God bless you guys~!

You need to find a good pediatrician who takes care of you as well as your child. I can recommend one but we live up north. I would call around to your local peds and test them out because you are going to have years of these questions to come and there is more security to having a doctor tell you things.
You don't want to cut him back and definatly don't suppliment with water at this age. You are doing fine. He does not weigh too much. Doctors usually won't worry about weight untill atleast six months. Babies will also go through growth spurts where they will increase thier amount of formula and then stay there for a while.
But no one's advise replaces that of a pediatrician. I hope you find a good one

Hi S.,

On the daycare issue there are a couple of options you have 1) In-Home or a center. For the city of Independence you can watch 4 children unrelated to you and still be legal. You can look at the health Dept in Blue Springs they should have a list of local child cares (in- home and center based) if I can find it I will send it to you.

As far as the formula goes I have 4 kids and 2 of my 4 were eating like that. The 3rd was eating 8 ounce bottles every 3 hours at 8 weeks. The 4th was eating 8 ounces every 4 hours by 12 weeks. The 3rd was eating cereal at 8 weeks because she weighed 16 pounds she was so chubby. I'm not saying you should put him on cereal but I got to the point with my 3rd that she was eating an 8 oz bottle and I was starting to fix 4 more ounces. There are some babies that do not get satisfied with a bottle alone and need more substance to be satisfied. I would say make sure you are feeding him at every 3 or 4 hours and don't let him get off from that. If he fusses rule out the things that could be a possibility first like cold/hot, wet/dirty, needs a cuddle or needs different scenery things like this.

For the pediatrician, I take my 4 kids to Independence pediatrics or Lee Summit pediatrics. The Independence offices number is ###-###-####, if you call their office you can get the other offices number also. My kids see Dr. Weldon Harris and a couple of others there. I like their office and the have urgent care hours on wednesday and thursday.

Here is the website to daycares that are licensed in your area. Put in either your zip code or city and then they will all come up.

You can also look on Craigslist.
Hope this helps you, W.

I'm sorry I do not know of a good daycare provider in your area but as far as the feeding goes he will eat as much as he needs. If he quits eating and there is an ounce left do not force him to eat it. If he is drinking all of his bottle and is content then that is how much he needs. I was told never to give my children (3yrs and 20 months)any water till they started eating "solids" then only a couple of sips out of the sippy cup to start them to get aquainted with the cup. If you baby is happy and is growing which is sound like he is. Then I think you are doing fine. Hang in there.

On Daycare I swear by Kindercare on South 7 Highway. My daughter started there when she was 2 and went there till she started Kindergarten. My son now 2 started when he was 6 weeks old and both loved it. It is a little expensive but the education they both are getting is well worth it. The women in the nursery are great and one has been with Kindercare for 20 years. Cant say enough good things. As for Dr. he is at 435 and state line and his name is Dr. Dattel and well worth the trip or Dr. Alan Powell in Lees summit. Hope this helps.
