Tokyo Steak House

My family loves the steakhouse in Salem NH mostly the fried rice. My problem is, a couple of times when served the chicken is was raw not pink in the middle but raw. We don't eat there often so I forgot to check the chicken. We ate there on new years day and took home the left overs. I gave my son the rest of my chicken to eat the next day with his noodles and my husband noticed the chicken wasn't cooked. He saved it. I wanted to bring it to their attention but if the manager is the same man that seats you he is very rude. If the place is busy he will bring you take out containers while your still eating. What would you do? Should I bring it back to them or just call and tell them.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank all of you that responded to my post. I did call and it was so matter of fact, no big deal. I said that we spent over $150.00 plus tip for raw chicken was unexceptable. Plus to be rushed out while we were still eating. I called yesterday and the man said he would tell the owner and cook. That was it. I called the Nashua restraunt and she said there was no owner to contact or corporate office. So now I'm angry and call Salem back. I asked to talk to a manager and she said she was the fill in manager, I told her what happened, again not like it was a big deal. I told her my son in law had gotten sick for two days after eating my daughters left overs, (he may have had the bug also who knows)that fact is we are talking raw chicken! Customer service is definetly not their number on priority because when I told her about being rushed by the same hostess all she said that he is know for that. Nice. Does anyone know how to contact the board of health? I have tried the yellow pages, 411 and on line. I must be looking up the wrong thing. Again thanks so all. I really apprecieate all your advice.

Hi K.,

If the food and service are as you say. I would definately report it. Additionally, I would not patronize the establishment again!

I agree with the posters who say take it back AND report it to the Board of Health (since this is not the first time). Is this a chain restaurant? If so, write a letter of complaint to the corporate office if the manager is rude. If they don't satisfy you, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Just keep a copy of all correspondence. If no corporate office and the manager is rude? Then file with BBB after calling the Board of Health.

If you haven't returned it or tossed it by the time you read this, then take some pictures for proof. Might not need them, but good to have until it's settled.

Take some of it back to them, and get the manager's name. Note if he is rude. Take the rest to the local Board of Health in that town. Tell the BOH what happened with the manager and what he said/did.

If you ever eat there again, cut the chicken open immediately and report it to the server/manager.

If they are rushing you out the door to get more customers in, and rushing your chicken to the table to get you fed and moved out soon, then they are way too interested in income and not in adhering to regulations. Massachusetts has a certification called Safe Serv (I think that's it) and I'm sure NH has something similar. At least one person in the kitchen, and maybe more, must be certified in safe food handling (refrigeration, prep, & cooking). They can be shut down if they don't adhere.

Please don't let this go, even if you never eat there again. Someone else will get sick!

Hi K.,
I would call to see if they smoke or if it's cured meat like ham. It would be pink but fully cooked. With the regulations in restaurants I would check that out first just incase. My husband does this with alot of our food in his commercial cooker. Hopefully this is the answer and not that it is raw. Good luck.

Hi K.,
Well first, I think I would definately be taking that place off of my good eats list!! Especially if your kids are eating there! I had a similiar situation with a local McDonalds here by home. I would always take my boys there to eat at least one day a week for lunch. Mainly because they both had different schedules and that was the halfway point for us before carrying on with our schools and therapies. Anyway, at that time I was breaking up my younger son's chicken nuggets for him( he liked to shove too much in his mouth at times), and I noticed a blue rubbery thing in the middle of one. It looked like a hard piece of plastic to me. I was shocked and furious at the same time because my children were just eating this, and who knows what could have happened, not to mention how many other kids may have eaten this or not known. So, I took it back to the manager there and showed them nugget with the object in it. He just apoligized and then had the nerve to ask if they could replace the nuggets! I wanted to be sick! The person who owned the McDonalds called me later that evening asking me all sorts of questions, and went on to say how odd that was to find something like that in their chicken! That made me even more mad, and I explained to him that I probly wouldn't have even seen it if I hadn't broken the nugget up for my son. What if he would have choked on that!? Again, he was very rude and made it out to seem like I was just complaining about nothing! Needless to say, I will tell you that it was over a year ago, last October to be exact, and we have never eaten at another McDonald's since! I refuse to take my kids to any place that cannot make sure that the food they are serving specificaly to children is safe for them to eat! Don't get me wrong, McDonald's has done alot of great things for charties, but you will never again catch my family eating there!
Sorry for the long story, but I just wanted you to know how strongly I feel about this. When you go into a place to eat, you are expecting them to make sure they are practicing safe measures with cooking and preparing your food. Yes, you are the one choosing to eat there, but there are regulations also! If I were you, I would not be going back there unless you like raw chicken! It seems that that place is so busy with keeping up, that the food safety is being compromised! I wish you luck and hope you add a new place to your favorite eats!

Hi K.,
I love the Tokyo Steak House too. We eat there all the time. I always get steak so I've never had the same bad experience. I agree that the culture is sometimes a bit different in regards to customer service. I don't know that the manager will be helpful or polite. You should call and let them know what happened. If they do not offer you a refund. Then I would dispute the charge with your credit card company. I agree with some of the previous posts (although I thought some were really critical of you).

Maybe we both need to rethink about going back there. I agree with who ever said if they are being careless with the chicken what else are they being careless with.
I made up my own recipe for the rice from watching them make it. Email me if you'd like it!
Good Luck!

You should bring it to their attention for sure! Especially since you've had the experience several times. My other suggestion is to try the New Toyko steakhouse in Methuen next to WalMart and Market Basket. Very polite people, manager always checks to see how things are and I've never, ever had undercooked food! We love going there.

If you are getting bad service and raw chicken I would think that you wouldn't go back there. Certainly there are other restaurants that have better customer service and will not poison your family.

Raw chicken is not only gross.. but dangerous! Especially when it comes into contact with cooked food. If they are this careless about chicken, what else are they careless about?

Definitely bring it to the managers attention - this is a serious health hazard. If you don't get a positive response where you think that they will actually address the problem, you should report the restaurant to the Salem Board of Health. that's just not right, raw chicken is just a breeding ground for so many nasty intestional illneses! good Luck!

Do yourself and all the rest of us a big favor and call/write the owners. Either copy or threaten to copy the health department. Bacterial infection from undercooked chicken is a huge danger. It makes a lot of us sick and can be just awful for anyone, much less a child. Campylobacter is a common kind of infection that can come from undercooked chicken and it is insidious, as it does not surface immediately. It takes a while and you don't realize you're sick right away. As much as you like this restaurant, don't go there again. I sure never will. Any restaurant that even has a hint of lack of sanitation or good health practices should not be frequented.

First and foremost, you shouldn't feed your children chix from an outside source(restaurant), because you don't know how they are preparing their chix. This place has served you raw chix before and you still ate there, if that was me I would have complained on the spot and never returned. You have to be very careful w/chix because there is so much bacteria that can transferred to you or your loved ones if not prepared properly. Sorry if I sound mean, but it's the truth. I am very careful about where we eat out w/my baby. Enough said on that.

Most importantly contact the Dept of Public Health in that town, and express your concern. They will act on it, if they deem it requires attention. This is a good outlet to let all the moms out there know about this restaurant. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Take care K..
