Son Getting Tongue Tie surgery...anyone Been Through This?

My son had this procedure earlier this year, and he is 4. I will be honest...it was a bit harder than I thought. He had some goofey juice beforehand, and he was given gas during the procedure (he was officially out). The problem was when he woke up. He came out of the gas really fast & wasn't aware of anything except the pain. Once the nurse got some pain meds in him, he was better.

We also made the focus to be his new tongue and not the procedure itself. We only asked about the procedure a couple of times, and I don't think he remembers it at all. We also videotaped him doing a lot of stuff with his new tongue...like touching the top of his teeth. I also went & got a cookie cake for him the next day that had a pic of a tongue (like the Rolling Stones) that said, "Congrats on Your New Tongue!" He loved it!

We had my son's clipped as a baby. We found it since he was having trouble nursing. It was the best decision we ever made. He was able to nurse successfully afterwards and he does not have trouble speaking. Since he was young, no anesthesia was involved. However, he was under anesthesia for his tubes and will be again when we have his adenoids and tonsils removed in a couple of weeks. I know that it can be scary to put your son through something painful and that has risks, but one thing that I have always done that has helped me is write down the pros and cons. Our son has done well through all the procedures and surgeries we have put him through and each time, the results of the surgeries outweighed the risks of anethesia or the little pain that he had to suffer through. Trust your doctor and your motherly instincts! I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers.

My son also had it done as a baby - I know it's got to be harder for both of you since yours is older. But, you definitely need to get it done. As a baby, mine only needed a little numbing gel and it was quick and easy. He didn't even cry and went right back to sleep. But, an 8 yo will have fear issues, so anesthesia has got to be the best bet. I know it's scary for you and for him, but it will be over quickly and it will be for the best to help him with his speech issues. Good luck - I'm sure it's a stressful situation!!!

i'm just curious. how did you come to the conclusion that he has to have his tongue clipped. Did the pediatrician recommend it? Did a speech therapist advise it?

my husband had this done when he was a child... and my mother-in-law was asking if my son needs it, too. my son has some speech delay issues. He sometimes drops his K, CA and S sounds (candy, snake, smash, sticker).... but once you remind him how to say it .... he repeats it the correct way. So I'm thinking he doesn't need this. Speech therapists nor his pediatrician have suggested it.

My four month olds was clipped when he was two days old. It's an easy procedure and they recover really fast. My older son has tubes and he went under the general anesthesia for that and it was fine. I've had some procedures done on just Valium and it really makes it very bearable, so the partial sedation should be fine. As far as the doctor goes, if his staff is good, that generally says a lot about the doctor and they are the ones that will be dealing with you and your son more directly, so if you like the nurses and the dr has good experience, I say go for it.

my dd had it done when she was just about 14-15 months old. She did have general anesthesia - they presedated her with a suppository - so she never saw a needle. She fell asleep on my lap and woke up on my lap. It was very short - in and out in about 1 hour. She had it done in a surgery center - her ENT was with Dr. Palmer in Southlake - I love Dr. Palmer, didn't like the guy we saw though!! She was a little hesitant to do much with her tongue at first, but she had an easy recovery. She is 5 1/2 now, and I am so glad we did it. I only wish she had it done at birth, b/c she could not bottle feed!
