My daughter who is 17 months old has been a stellar sleeper. She even tells you when she wants to go "night, night" for naptime and bedtime. We put her down around 8:00 PM, she takes a 1-2 hour nap each day and has always slept until 7:00-7:30 AM. On the weekends we could cuddle with her in our bed and she would sleep until 8:00 or 9:00 AM. About three weeks ago she started waking up at 5 AM every morning. It's taking a toll on me! It's way too early! Why the sudden change? She still sleep in a crib! How do I get her to sleep later? We tried putting toys in her crib to play with -- no help. Ever since she was born she has always woken up crying from naps and bedtime. Is that normal? I hear other mom's talk about having babbling babies playing in their cribs while they listen and grab a few more winks. This has never happened to us. We are woken up by shrill screaming and crying every morning. It's fine from a nap, it's fine at 7:30 but at 5:00 I just can't take it. Help! Anyone else have a crying waker?

What can I do next?

Is she working on molars? In my experience (3 kids) 1 and 2 year molars are extremely disruptive to sleep patterns.

does this job come with ear plugs ? my little one with wake up with a MMMMOOOOMMMM!!! and she is now 14 months. so yeah i know how much fun it can be. naptime is easy, she just doses off, bed time is another story altogether. after she gets bedtime songs and story, she gets put in bed, no sooner then her bottom hits the mattress, she is up again, and crawling at top speed down the hallway, then while she plays for a few more minutes, i gather up some of her toys, her bottle and then coax her back into bed, and yes she will try to get out of bed a second time, then she will play with her toys for few minutes, take her bottle and then SLEEP

Try putting her to sleep a little later than normal.

My daughter did this until she was 2 1/2 and I would actually get up with her. then I was pregnant with her brother and I just couldn't do it anymore. I put some toys in her crib, put black out shades up, and turned off the monitor. She cried it out for about 2 days and then she started sleeping until around 645, which was early, but do-able. Both my kids always woke crying. You may want to move her bedtime up a bit, sometimes when kids are overtired they wake up super early.

My daughter will be 17 months on the 21st and she as always been a horrible sleeper. In the last two weeks she has finally started sleeping through the night. My daughter has never just played in her crib either. She as always woken up with that shrill screaming like she is being hurt but there is nothing wrong with her. Sorry I can't be of any help but I wanted to let you know that your not the only one with a cryer when they wake.

Hi S.,
My daughter was a crying waker for the first two years of her life. EVERY morning she awoke screaming. I used to blame the fact that I was sad during my pregnancy with her and she 'caught' my grief somehow. But who knows! She did grow out of it after her second birth day and is a happy, lively little girl now. Your daughter is probably going through some brain growth and this will pass - hang in there. I know how hard it is to hear that before you even get your head off the pillow. It will pass!
