Hi Ladies! My son will be 3 years old in a couple weeks and refuses to be a big boy. He was introduced to the potty at 2 years old. I haven't been forcing him to use the potty, but have been encouraging it with all my might. He knows where pee and poo are supposed to go and knows that BIG girls and boys use the potty. When I ask him why he didn't tell mommy he needed to use the big boy potty, he says "because I'm a baby". I know that he "feels the urge", because if he is in the bathtub and he has to potty he will tell me. When he does use the potty I give him lots of praise and he even get's his favorite treat, skittles. I have taken him to the store and he's picked out his own "big boy pants", I give him praise and treats for going, but I'm at a loss. I can't force him to be a big boy, but I think that since he goes when he feels like it (when he wants a treat), he should be going all the time. I've let him wear his big boy pants and when he has accidents he doesn't tell me, so I stopped that. I was tired of finding messes everywhere and found myself getting frustrated. He's super smart and I just feel like he's ready, but he tells me he doesn't want to be a big boy, that he is a baby.

I'm out of creative ideas and I am wondering if any of you ladies have any advice or creative potty training ideas. Thank you in advance!

I started my son at 18 months and he was virtually daytime potty trained at 2. We never used pull-ups or anything like that. Whenever we were home we left him naked from the waist down. We also never used a little potty. He straddled the regular toilet backwards until he could scoot up on it the correct way. Without having the sensations of something underneath to catch he perferred not having an accident. We just took him every 15-30 minutes until he could pee on demand. Hope this helps.

Another mom on here gave me the greatest idea when I was going through this. Boys, being boys, can be more intrigued into going in the potty with just sheer curiosity. So the mom on here told me to explain to him where to pee and poo go when flushed. So we went into this long story about how the pee/poo goes in the "little" toilet hole, down the pipe in the wall, under the house, under the yard, to the BIG poo hole where it meets up with the other poo, washes down the big pipe, and then all the way to the "stinky factory". So when he would go, we would flush the toilet, and the run outside where I would point and follow where the poo was under the yard, to the manhole, down the street, etc. He loved that and just thought it was awesome... and pretty soon he was going in the potty all the time. Hope this works for you!

We went through the whole "treat-sticker-special underwear" deal with my daughter. It about wore me out. With my son, now 4, I didn't have the energy. It was beyond smooth with him. I never mentioned it. I also never put him in pull-ups, only diapers. Once he couldn't go out to play with the other kids at the Y because he had diapers on. He didn't like that. And when we went to IKEA and they wouldn't take him at the kids playground for the same reason-- it started to click for him. I bought cheap diapers (Target, Kroger) -- nothing with anything too cute on it. By the time he was 3 1/2 he was only wearing a diaper for naps and at bedtime. He turned 4 in August and said to me "I don't want any more diapers Mommy." That was it. We were done with diapers. This worked wonderfully for us. I think no pullups was a big help. Good Luck.

I have a daughter that will be turning 4 in January and just became potty trained in the last 3 weeks. Try not to get frustrated, it will happen. My daughter just did it when she was ready and no amount of treats or anything would change her mind. I went through the same thing you are. She would tell me she wasn't a big girl, that she was a baby. She would go here and there, but nothing consistent. Once her father and I backed off, she did it on her own.

My son is just turning 3 1/2 and just within the past 3 weeks he's going potty (pee) on the toilet without having to be reminded or having very few accidents (hasn't had one in a few days) but he wears a pullup to bed and he won't go poopy on the potty (asks for diaper when he has to go). But I had been trying off and on to potty train him since he was 2 with no luck-just ended up getting frustrated. But I think this time around he was really ready to be a "big boy". He took to it very quickly. Of course, he's not fully potty trained but I feel he's almost there since he goes pee on the potty on his own now. I just put him in his "big boy" underpants when we first started (this time around) and kept bringing him to the potty every 20 to 30 minutes the first day, the second day-every 45 minutes and by the 3rd day I barely had to remind him anymore-he went on his own. And he had fewer accident each day. After about a week, he was like an old pro! But I think he just had be really ready to be a "big boy" and mature enough and before this he wasn't. Everyone tell me that 3 1/2 is the magic age for potty training boys and I believe it.

I read once that whether or not a child uses the potty is one of the only thing he/she has control over. That's why some kids just refuse to be trained. I did the sticker/reward and made a big deal over my daughter "going potty" around her second birthday. She was 3yrs old before "she decided" she didn't want diapers anymore. Once she decided we had no problems anymore.

Before that she would go sometimes... but just as soon as we would go somewhere she would go on herself. So I made her wear a pull up when we went out and always made her use the potty whether she felt like she needed to or not before we would leave the house. To this day.. she uses the bathroom before we go anywhere and that saves the aggravation of having to find a bathroom once we're out.

Hang in there... your little one will get tired of diapers too.

H.,

This sounds exactly like my 2nd son. What I did was just stripped him naked, put the potty in the middle of the floor, turned on the TV and left him alone. A little while later he came to me and said "I peed" and he had gone in the potty.
If I would "ask" him if he needed to go he would NEVER go, he would flat refuse!!! When I stripped him naked and left him alone he went. When he did I gave him huge praise and M&Ms.We did this for 3 or 4 days, then I put underwear on him and he had a few accidents with the underwear, but he was always near the potty trying to get them off. Sometimes I think the "underwear" gets in the way of potty training.
Good Luck
