Seeking Late Potty Training Advice

My daugter is 3 1/2 and is not even close to being potty trained. We have been
putting her on the toilet every day at least 4 times a day for a year. She has
pee peed, but only occassionally. She gets a big smile on her face when she
does it, she knows it's a good thing. I have tried putting her in training
pants and she could care less if she is wet. I have tried putting her in big
girl Dora underwear, but when she saw them, she just cried. I am not sure what
to make of that. If she resists sitting on the potty I don't force the issue.
If she does, I try to get her to sit as long as possible. She is also speech
delayed, and has not expressed any feeling of having to go. We have books and
DVD's. She never talks about pee pee, but she will tell me when she went poop
poo. I am at my whits end. At this rate, I am worried she won't be trained to
go to kindergarten. She is receiving speech therapy, but it takes time. I feel
like time is ticking to get her to use the potty.
Any late potty trainers out there that have some advice?

What can I do next?

My daughter was almost three when she finally was trained. I remember being very frustrated also. I read everything and questioned anyone I could about the subject. Finally I said what day do you think you are going to do this. Her response was, "Thursday". So we made a big count down to potty day and on Wednesday we went shopping so she could pick her own special panties out for the big day. Thursday morning she woke up and put on the panties and for the first week I probably put her on the potty about every 1 1/2 hours and then I finally eased up and she started telling me when she needed to go. There were a few accidents along the way but not many. She still wears pull-ups at night as she has never woke up to go in the middle of the night. My peds believe they train when they are ready and the less stress you put on it the faster they go. I hope it all works out for you soon.

I am a stay at home mom of two 4 year old daughter and 2 1/2 year old boy(who may be married in diapers!)

I gave my daughter stickers to put on the bathroom wall each time she went. I actually had 2 different set of stickers depending on what she did. She really felt good when I gave her one to put up.

MOST LATE TALKERS DO NOT CATCH UP FAST. NOW KIDS WHO ARE JUST SLIGHTLY BELOW AVERAGE (WHICH IS 10% OF BOYS) ARE LABELLED LATE TALKERS, THEY WILL CATCH UP BETWEEN 2 AND 3.5 WHEREAS THE REAL LATE TALKERS (2-3%, AND PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THIS IS MILLIONS OF KIDS, INCLUDING ALOT OF REALLY SMART ONES) WILL PROBABLY CATCH UP BY AGE 7, SOMETIMES AS LATE AS 9. USUALLY THEY ARE VERY EVENED OUT BY 7 BECAUSE KIDS TEND TO PLATEAU AT 4 IN SPEECH (EVEN AS THEY EMOTIONALLY MATURE). THERE ARE VERY VERY FEW KIDS WITH PERSISTENT SPEECH PROBS. SOME KIDS ARE NOT HIGHLY SOCIAL OR GREAT COMMUNICATORS, THIS HAS NO BEARING ON COGNITIVE FUNCTION (EVEN THOUGH TESTS MAY SADDLE KIDS WITH LOW i.Q. BECAUSE THEY ARE VERBALLY BASED) OR ON HAPPINESS OR ON ANY KIDS FUTURE. i AM NOT A FAN OF SELF CONTAINED CLASSES, ITS A GROSS SEGREGATION OF KIDS WITH PROBLEMS WHO CANT HELP EACH OTHER. I RECOMMEND INTEGRATED CLASSES OR SMALL SCHOOLS WITH LOW TEACHER TO STUDENT. MONITOR YOUR CHILDS HAPPINESS. IF THEY ARE NOT HAPPY THEY WILL NOT PERFORM. THEY WILL FALL IN LINE BUT THEY WONT ABSORB. BE PATIENT AND DONT COMPARE YOUR KIDS. IVE FOUND THE LATER ONE WAITS FOR POTTY THE WORSE IT IS. I HAVE TRAINED GENUINELY DISABLED KIDS, NOT KIDS WITH FAKE DISORDERS LIKE ASD AND ADD AND I CAN TELL YOU, IF A CHILD HAS EVEN MINIMAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS THEY CAN BE TRAINED IN THE POTTY. WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER RESISTANCE, YOU CAN TRY WAITING AND RESTARTING ONCE BUT AFTER THAT, YOU EITHER TAKE CONTROL OR YOULL BE WAITING A LONG TIME. CONTROL IS MAKING THEM SIT ON THE TOILET NO MATTER WHAT ONCE AN HOUR FOR A FEW MINUTES. IF A CHILD IS HOLDING IN POOP YOU MUST GIVE THEM LAXATIVES AND NOT A LITTLE. IT HAS TO BE ENOUGH THAT THEY CANT HOLD IT IN AND YOU HAVE TO DO THIS FOR A MONTH SO STAY CLOSE TO HOME. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO BREAK STOOL WITHHOLDING. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO KIDS WHO SQUEEZE, SOMETIMES ITS THEM HOLDING POOP IN NOT TRYING TO GET IT OUT! AS FAR AS SPEECH, I HAVE FOUND THIS METHOD THE BEST (CONTRARY TO WHAT SPEECH THERAPISTS DO), NARRATE WHAT GOES ON IN HIS WORLD IN SIMPLE SENTENCES, WHATEVER HE SAYS, ADD ONE EXTRA WORD TO IT AND REPEAT IT TWICE. THIS HELPS ALOT! GOOD LUCK!

Hi K.-
My daughter, at the age of 3, would pee, but refused to have a BM. She was (gulp) about 1 week before her 4th day before she started having a BM on the toilet. It was soo stressful, but we got through it and so will you!! Give it time! She'll catch on!!

my daughter is almost 3 and she pees on the potty when she feels like it but she always poops on the potty.

i figure as long as i don't have to change a poopy diaper, she can take all the time she needs!

i put her pull-ups in the bathroom so when she has to change her diaper, she has to do it in the bathroom, and she changes her own pull-up all by herself. i think both these things are helping her to go pee on the toilet more often.

also, once you switch to pull-ups, don't use baby diapers any longer.

good luck i know it's frustrating.

Dear K.,
Don't worry your daughter will be just fine, Some kids just take a little longer to potty train. Did you ever try taking her into the bathroom with you when you go? That is one of the strategies that i used when i started potty training my daughter. Also I took her to the store and let her pick out her own big girl panties, an she would wear them over her pull ups. I hope this will help you a little.
