Seeking Advice on 22 Month Old with Sore That Won't Heal

My 22 month old fell about a month ago and scraped his chin. The problem is that he keeps picking at the wound and therefore it won't heal. It has been over a month now...we've tried bandaids, liquid bandages, neopsporin, vasiline, cortisone cream and no matter what he keeps picking at it. It still looks like it happened yesterday. Any advice?

What can I do next?

My daughter had a scrap on her chin and wouldn't stop picking at it either. I finally put bandaids on it at night because she would scratch it in her sleep. I put Arbonne skin conditioning oil on it day and night. It promotes healing and helps with scarring as well. It also helped it stay moisturized so it didn't itch as much. It finally healed!!

Try using vitamin E oil, you can find it at any health food store, dont try cvs or wallgreens or any grocery store cause they dont carry it. the oil will usually heal anything and if it is used soon enough it wont leave a scar. hope this helps.

Hi T.,

My daughter does the same thing. Liquid bandages and vitamin e (once the scab is gone) are great for healing but don't work well when they keep getting scraped off! The best solution I've found is to keep her nails really short so she can't get any traction. It's not perfect but it gives the meds time to work. I just have to stay on top of it though. Good luck!

T.,take him and have him checked for diabetes. This is how I found out I was diabectic because I had jabbed a place on my forehead and it was taking forever to heal.Well two things happened -----the biopsy came back positive for basal cell carcinoma which is skin cancer [you don't have to worry about that] but I found out I was type two diabectic and that was why it was'nt healing.Children can have juvenile diabetes and slow healing sores can be a symtom.Something to take into consideration. God Bless.

This is a hard one because it happens to us with our DD all the time-I swear she is the worst kid for picking at her scabs. Unfortunatly, I don't have an answer for you however, PLEASE make sure you keep an eye on it because our daughter got impentigo from a previous scrape on her chin that she would not leave alone.
