About 2 weeks ago my 7 year old daughter took a pretty bad fall while playing outside and cut her chin pretty badly. She has 2 lacerations on the bottom of her chin that required a total of 13 stitches. All has been going well, the stitches came out about a week ago and I’m now wondering what is best to minimize scarring. We are still applying an antibiotic cream twice a day, which is all the doctor that took out the stitches said to do. Has anyone used Maderma or Vitamin E with any success? Also, when should we start using that type of product? Thanks so much Moms!!!

Just keep the stitches area moist with something like Neo-sporin, it's fine to apply it more than twice a day. The moister you keep the area, the less scar tissue will develop.

My niece was bite really bad in the face by a dog and required plastic surgery. The plastic surgeon recommended the scar treatment patches and they worked great. She still has some minimal scarring but compared to what it was it looks like the patches worked.

Vitamin E works wonders for me for scars, burns, etc. Trader Joe's is great, just apply a dab daily, scar will fade quickly, some even go away completely. Some still leave a slight mark but may go away with time. I use it for myself, burns, and I'm old, but still have ability to heal. So she will def heal faster.

Vitamin E is a good idea. As to when, I'd say as soon as possible but check with your doc.

My sister had a very bad scar on her upper lip when she was about 7 and the Dr. recommended vitatmin E. It did help. I used Maderma myself and was impressed with the effects - the nurse at the hospital recommended it to me. I would check w/ the pediatrician however, or at least the pharmacist as the drug store before giving it to her. Good luck.

My sister started using Mederma for my great niece who has scarring from pulling on a pot of boiling water. She started after a year or so only because that is when they discovered the product to try it. I would wait until it totally heals and then try it out. My great nieces scars are really improved, though they will never really go away due to the extent of it. I think they have Mederma for kids now too.

Yes... I have. My son crashed on his bike after building a ramp and trying to play evil Kenevil. His face was really scratched up badly and the dr said there was no way around it that he would have some scaring because even though there were no stitches, it scraped the skin off one side of his face. As a mom I was devistated. Someone told me to keep Vitamin E on it. I read some articles and decided that would be the best thing. I bought some Vit E and every 30 min to hr I would cut the pill and squeeze Vit E on him. I even sat up beside him every night for 2 weeks or more putting vit E on his face. That was 15 yrs ago. To this day you can not see one scar and would never know he did anything. He will tell you to this day that his face looks good becuase of his mom and is very appreciative that I sat up and did that for him.
Now I started putting that on him immediately after it happened. I didn't wait 2 weeks afterwards so I don't know if that will have any effect on it or not. But it will never hurt to try it.

I have never used Mederma, but I have used Extra virgin coconut oil on my daughter and she didn't have any scarring.

Although Mederma works well, it does have a very strong smell. I have had GREAT success using the generic scar gel from CVS! You can use it as soon as the stiches are out. I think they make a "kids" version. Worked for me! LL

There is a skin conditioning oil by Arbonne that is only $12 & lasts a long, long time. I've had 2 family members have melanoma removed from their face & gave them this to use. One of their doctors wanted to know the product because she had such great results. We have many plastic surgeons that use this product because it is safe to put on stitches right away. It does contain vitamin E as well as 12 or so plant based oils. I would be careful about putting petroleum based products or products containing mineral oil because this will create barrier to the skin, it will not absorb & will not allow the skin to absorb moisture that it needs to heal. This product is very healing. We use it on many boo boos, skinned knees... in our house & it is also great on any kind of burn. I'm sure you could find someone local if you'd like to try it but here's a link to the product via my website:

I used Aloe for my daughter's chin. SHe still has a scar but you don't notice it unless you are looking for it. It's funny though, I can't tell you how many people that I now see with a sscar on their chin! Maybe a rite of passage!!
