I currently have a cold and a one month old. I also breasfeed so i know that i can't take any medication. I am kinda nervous because i dont want him to get it. the doctor said i could take tylenol but it makes me sleepy. if anybody has anyother suggestions please let me know.
Thank you all for your great advice, i guess i underestimated the power of breastmilk because he never got the cold. I was soo thankfull that he did not. Once again thank you all for your great advice.
You can also take Claritin for stuffiness. One thing I would recommend though is antibacterial hand sanitizer! When my son was 1 or 2 months old I got sick too and before I handled him at all I would use that or wash my hands in the sink and he never got it (thankfully!)
I don't know if you are already over your cold but, I alsp breast feed my 7 month old and I've gotten two colds during this time. The best option for me was natural medicine. No harsh chemicals and great for mom and baby.
As your doctor if you can take airborne. It really works. It
is like an alka selter but doesnt have a bad taste. You should
really take it when you feel the symptoms. Give it a try and good luck feel better
Just keep nursing and make sure you wash your hands a lot. I got a bad bug when my son was almost 3 months old. He never got sick. He is almost 13 months and I am still nursing and he has never been sick. I on the other hand had have had gotten sick maybe 4 times over the last 13 months.

Hi Tashania! I have great news for you. The breast milk that you are offering to your baby is so powerful that his immune system is super-strong. Let me tell you, on my daughters first christmas (she was 5 months) I caught a TERRIBLE stomach flu. I hadn't been sick like that since I was a child. I had been full-time nursing my daughter, and had waited too long to introduce an artificial nipple. Basically a bottle was not an option, so I HAD to nurse. I was SO sick that my husband would have to bring her to me for feedings while I sat next to the toilet ready to get sick again. It was absolutely no fun...but you know what..she never got sick!!! And to this day her immune system is SO strong. I nursed her for 13 months, and looking back it was the best gift I could have ever given her. I hope this makes you feel better!! Also, ask your dr about taking airborne with nursing...we use that a lot when we feel sick and it REALLY helps. I am not sure of it's compatibility with nursing..so check first!!

One thing I would caution you against is benedryl. Anything that will dry you up like an antihistimine may also dry up your milk. Make sure you nurse your baby often. The antibodies will help. Even if your baby does catch your cold, chances are it will be really mild for him/her. I hope you feel better soon!

I am a doula and mom of 2 and expecting 1 more any day now. I nursed my youngest through a very bad flu when she was a baby and she never got sick because my breastmilk and yours for that matter, produces anti-bodies specific to what you are suffering from. KEEP BREAST FEEDING!!!! Also you can safely dose up on a good pro-biotic. It is safe for you and even safe if given directly to the baby. Be sure that you are getting a pro-biotic that must be refrigerated, that way you know that the cultures remain live. They even make them specifically for baby. Try whole foods or some other health food store. ( F.Y.I. the pro-biotic will also help keep you from getting yeast or thrush when nursing) Good Luck!

for you, I say squirt saline up you nose, let gravity do it's thing, and then blow your nose as you feel like it...
try steam, too- like a vaporizor or even a steamy bathroom or even boil a pot of water & when it cools enough, stick your head over it w/ a towel draped over you & the pot of water...
I had bronchitis when my daughter was 2 months old. I believe my doctor said I could take most over the counter medicines. The best thing to do is to keep breastfeeding. Whatever you have the baby has already been exposed to and by continuing to breastfeed you continue to pass her your immunities. I had fevers of 102-104 daily and the baby never got sick. Breastfeeding is pretty amazing.
Actually your one month old should be fine. He/She is getting exactly the antibodies that they need from breastfeeding. The main thing is to find something that makes you feel better. The baby will be fine. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know what medication to recommend but I do remember when I got very ill with my firstborn I was afraid of breastfeeding because I didn't want to get her sick and when I called the doctor they said to continue breastfeeding and it would be the best I could do for the little one.
