I Think I Am Catching a Cold - Don't Want My 2 Month Old to Catch It Too?

For the past few days, I haven't been feeling great and I am starting to feel like my throat is starting to bother me a little too. I am breastfeeding my 2 month old daugther and I am also currently on maternity leave.

I know it is extremely hard to try to not get my 2 month old sick as well. Is there any thing I can do to lessen the chances of my 2 month old from getting sick as well?

I am worried because I am home all day with her and breastfeeding her, so my baby is constantly around me. My husband works long hours- about 10 hours a day, so he is only around at night to help out.

What can I do next?

If you're breastfeeding her she's getting the antibodies to the cold...

It is NOT uncommon for everybody in the family EXCEPT the breastfeed baby to get sick. Nurse as often as you can to keep her hydrated and get as many antibodies as possible in her! (Freezing kills antibodies and refrigerated milk loses them over time, so directly from the breast as often as possible is best)

Change your clothes daily. Change your sheets, or spray them with Lysol when you get up in the mornings. Wear a mask. Wash your hands often. REST and drink.

As long as you are nursing she should be fine. Mine never got a cold while the rest of us did and she also didn't get the chicken pox my other two had because I was nursing.

Hope you are feeling better.

i posted a similar question to this a few days ago. i dont agree with wearing a mask. sorry, but to me that just seems to be a bit much and don't forget that she was exposed long before you ever showed symptoms. you would also have to change your mask constantly and would have had to be wearing it before you ever even had a sniffle. i also ebf my 2 month old and still have my cold. knock on wood, she hasn't shown a single symptom yet. just wash your hands and nurse nurse nurse. when your husband gets home let him take her (so you can have a break and she will have a little less contact). i am doing the same exact thing. good luck. :)

Congratulations on your baby girl!!
She should be font & not get suck since you're exclusively breast feeding. The immunities you are providing will protect her.
I have 2 kids that I EBF. When my oldest was 9 mos old, I got strep. He never even got the sniffles.
She'll be fine.

She will be fine and you will also. Keep nursing - I know it is hard to nurse when you don't feel great but keep doing it so that your supply doesn't diminish. She is getting your anti-bodies, essentially, your immune system so as your immune system ramps up to fight the cold, she will get that benefit. Wash your hands a lot, try not to sneeze on her and know that all babies get a first cold. It sounds like she is your first - so if that is correct - nap whenever she is napping to shorten the time of your cold! I know it seems hard to do but really, even if you just lie down next to your baby when she is sleeping at least your body is resting. See if your husband can "take over" for a few hours when he gets home so that you can get in a longer nap. It gets better. C.

Nursing gives her the antibodies your body is producing to fight the cold you caught. So she gets to "fight" the cold without ever feeling bad. Most likely she will not catch it at all, generally breast fed babies are the only ones in the house NOT to get sick. Keep nursing like normal, wash your hands frequently and avoid lots of kisses and up close snuggling. Feel better!
