Pregnancy Mask

I developed the "pregnancy mask" darker pigmentation above my eyebrows and on my forhead after my son was born, he was about 6 or seven months old and it was very faint. Now my son is 18 months old and it seems darker and larger. I was wondering if anyone else had this experience and if it could be due to the fact that I am nursing? I hope it goes away when I stop nursing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the responses, it is so nice to know that I am not alone. It seems like the moms around me do not have this problem and I was feeling a little alone in this issue. I am glad to hear it is pretty common. I think that I will try a prenatal vitamin (I have stopped taking mine:( ) and of couse limit sun exposure. I am uncomfortable buying chemical products while nursing however when I am done I will be happy to try the products people talked about. Thank you so much for all your help!

I got it, too! Still dealing with a bit of it, and my son is 2 1/2 years old! Are you fair-skined? I am, and I think that's why it's more noticable. Also, being in the sun, or too much exfoliation can actually aggrevate it! I do have a product I'm using by Mary Kay called Even Complexion Essence. It has GREATLY decreased the appearance of my mask, and I see less of it every week! Let me know if you would like to try it. Be happy to bring you a sample!

My daughter is 14 months and I noticed the same thing! My "mask" was much lighter after her birth and had spread and gotten much darker since! I am also still nursing. I gave up and went to the dermatologist. My doctor said that it is hormonal and tough to get rid of... I am using a bleaching cream and exfoliating mask several times a week and have seen a lot of improvement in a month. My doctor knows that I am nursing and has assured me that it is perfectly safe.

The dark pigment is usually a vitamin deficiency. What you need is a real multi vitamin with high B content. NOT the kind you can buy at the grocery store!!!!!!!
Rainbow Light makes a great prenatal that I used for about 10 years straight. (I nursed for 15+ years straight!) You can get them at Whole Foods.
I would be happy to help you improve your nutrition. Just email me.

I did & apparently it does take a while naturally especially if you breastfeed. I bought a microdermabrasion kit and scrubbed my face with it a few times a week for a couple of weeks - I saw a difference. After a couple of more weeks, it was gone altogether. Good luck & God Bless!

I had it with my first pregnancy, it got worse with sun exposure. Back then I tried everything from expensive lasers, to microderm but Obagi worked the best. I will go away on it's own when you are done nursing and your hormones go back to normal. I am pregnant again and I can't use any chemicals, so I've been applying lemon juice and the dark spots seem to lightening. Good luck.

A word of warning- What ever you use, what ever you do, no matter how much better it seems to be getting... It will always come back with sun exposure. If you manage to clear it up or lighten it up to a point that you are happy with I suggest you wear a very wide brim hat or carry an umbrella at all times. In my experience, no amount of sun screen can prevent it from returning.
For me as a mother of 2 young active girls I can't avoid the sun so I am learning to live with it.
I have spent a lot of time, money and energy trying to resolve this problem and have yet to find a "cure". Good luck.

I had the same thing. My dermatologist said to stay out of the sun that it would make it worse...have you been in the sun lately? Then he gave me some bleaching cream but I couldn't use it until AFTER I was done breastfeeding.

I also got the Pregnancy Mask and it finally started to fade after I was done nursing. Almost noexistent unless I got too much sun on my face so needless to say Sunscreen is a "best friend of mine" now and I always use it. I use YON KA skin care and I use their 25spf sunscreen. I also had a Gesner (sp?) peel at the dermatologist two years after my last child was done nursing to get rid of the last faded signs of the "pregnency mask" and I was amazed at how it is all gone now! A Gesner peel is under $200.00. Good luck and don't forget your sunscreen.

Hi M., I have exactly the same problem with "pregnancy mask" . Sorry if I make any mistake in my writting, Im from México, City, but I will do my best, to write as clear as possible.

But in my case the mask started to desapered using the "wee-wee of my daughter dippers", yes!, my mother suggest me to used it, and It works. The only thing that you should do, its to "clean" your face with the "wee-wee"of your son, don't be afraid, the smell it's quite good, specially if your son only drink your milk. I think it doesn's matter if you still nursing your baby, I does, and the mask as I told you, started to desapered.

I send you the best, for this issue. You cand do it!

Hello M.,
I had that same issue 9yrs ago w/my son. I tried everything skin doctors, expensive skin care lines. Until I found a Mary Kay product called "Microdermabration" I'm a true believer on this product I still use it till this day. And not only does it leave your skin feeling good. This is one of the reasons why today I sell Mary Kay products. I'm a true beleiver!

Under my eyes is very light and youcan only see when I don't have makeup on, my mustache is gone. Email me if you want to try ____@____.com

I just got this as well, but mine came when I stopped nursing. Mine are on the side of my face in between my eyebrows and my hair line. They look like age or liver spots. Really, what else could happen to our bodies?? WHat's next? Anyway, I haven't tried either of these products yet but I was just reading about them: Suis Face Cream, $48, has vitamin C and rose and flax seed oil to reduce pigmentation; Comfort Zone Absolute Pearl Cream SPF 12 Anti-oxidant Moisturizer, $90 uses pearl powder to reflect light and licorice to diminish dark spots. They say to use sunscrean regularly because the sun brings them out. Good luck! Let me know if anything works...

I have dark discolorations on my face and knees. I've tried so many products to get rid of them. I found Ambi at Wal- Mart for 4 bucks. Ambi is a bleaching type of cream, no scent and it comes in sensitive, oily and dry formulas. I love it because it's light wiehgt non greasy and it works. I've been using it 2 weeks at a time for 4 months and I can see the difference. With no side effects.

Are you taking birth control? Birth control gave me the "pregnancy mask" because of the hormones. Your hormones are also different because you're nursing. My "pregnancy mask" went away on its own once my hormones went back to normal.

I too have the pregnancy mask on my forehead. I've seen a couple of dermatologists and the verdict has been that it was brought on by the hormonal changes of being pregnant but that in fact it was all the prior years of sun damage.
One doctor gave me a perscription for some "fading" cream, it was pricey and I haven't really noticed any improvement. I am now very conscious of making sure I have sunscreen on my forehead so it doesn't get any darker. It did fade a bit over the winter months, so now I am doing my best to keep it under control.
Good luck.
