My daughter is 11 months old she has had a runny nose for 3 weeks and a cough for 2 and 1/2 weeks. She has ran no fever so I was thinking teeth or summer cold. Yesterday she had a little blood in her ears. She got tubes when she was 6 months old. I called her ENT and he said she needs her tubes checked. He could not see her today so he said she can go to her regular doctor. This morning she is coughing bad and she cant get nothing to come out. When I put my hand on her chest it rattles and I can hear and feel her wheezing. So I have made her and appointment today with her regular doctor but I was wondering if anyone had any for these problems before. Thank you all for your help!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok thank you for all the help. The Doctor determined after a few test that she has allergies. He started her on Clartin and Dicel today. She is to take the Clartin from now on and the Dicel until all of the mucus in her head and shest dries up. Thank you all for your help. If she is not better by next week he is sending her to a childrens allergy specialist.. Thanks again for all your help.

I agree that all sick children should be looked at by a doctor. Especially since her symptoms have lasted for SO long. 3 weeks is a really long time to let these symptoms drag on. Even if there is no fever. Maybe it's just allergies or even teething but you never know. Good Luck and I hope she gets better soon.

Sometimes it feels and sounds like wheezing but it's actually just her congestion that you're hearing. If it is true wheezing (make sure ur doc checks her lungs), you'll be sent home with a breathing treatment that'll help her lungs to open up. I'm really glad you're going to the doctor today. Have a list of symptoms and questions with you so you don't forget when you're in front of the doctor (you have no idea how many times I walked out of the dr's office thinking, damn I should have asked...).

Mom.
For sure I'd get her into see her regular Dr today. Her symptoms with the wheezing are a little concerning. I'd run the vaporizer today in her room when she is napping too until this passes to help her breathing. Seeing her Pediatrician will get to the help him diagnose what is wrong and get her some meds to feel better. GIve her some hugs and Good Luck

Could be allergies, summer cold, some virus that is making her cough. My kids have had this from time to time when they were little. Ask lots of good questions at her appt. Glad you got in.

these are all things that MUST be answered by a doctor who has the child in front of her. mamasource is good for many things, but diagnosing very sick children requires hands-on. i'm glad you're going to the doc today.

My son also had tubes in his ears. He had a ear infection that led to bloody drainage from the infected ear...tube was intact and doing it's job (draining)..ped said there are quite a bit of tiny blood vessels in the middle ear and sometimes they tend to get a little irritated and bleed during infections. (It wasn't a lot of blood though). As far as the wheezing goes, needs to be evaluated like everyone else has said. My son also has had this issue. He only gets wheezy when he has had a cold...and usually it takes a pretty bad cold to get him wheezing. We have a nebulizer machine at home to help him when he needs it...it delivers medication to the lungs by inhaling it through a mask. He only tolerates it when he is really sick though!!! Otherwise he hates it! Kids have very small airways to begin with so sometimes, with some kids, it doesn't take much to put them "over the edge"..if you know what I mean. It sounds as if she has been struggling with a cold for longer than her body wants to deal with it! Good luck and hope she gets better soon!

Coughing bad: Pertussis (aka croup) and pneumonia come to mind. Very dangerous.
Blood in ears: tubes dislodged? Don't know about that but without fever, I'm not suspecting an infection. Maybe eardrum broke?

When my daughter had mild pneumonia, my doctor had me lay her over my knees twice a day (morning, night) and cup my hands and kind of hit her back to help dislodge thick mucus. Everyday. We used cold water vaporizers really close to her for the same reason. Lots of warm soups, teas, water. You may be giving her an expectorant type med without the required water amount. (I don't know how young you give those things to kids)

She having ear pain? Try Tylenol and heating pad on ear.
My mom used to sit me in the bathroom with the hot shower running.

I think your regular doctor should be able to tell but insist on getting in today. If not, consider one of those children's clinics that accept same day appointments for emergencies.

Just to clarify Croup and Pertussis- not the same thing. Pertussis is AKA Whooping Cough and at 11 months old she should have had her vaccine for this already (3 actually) the cough is very distinguishable by the gasping for air after the cough. Croup is a really dry barking cough that will typically only occur at night.
My 11 month old actually just went to the dr for her cough and wheeze on Tues. They gave her an oral steroid, and a breathed steroid, but this is not her first bout of this. I think she needs to go to her Dr. and be evaluated. Hope she gets better soon.
