Overly Active Preschooler While 'Sick'?

Off the wall question I know, but my son as stated in my previous question has had this nasty cold (and small junky cough) for the last 2.5 weeks. But today he is OVERLY, I mean extremely active, running in circles, jumping screaming etc. I even whispered under my breath, man its like you're on speed or something---Obviously feeling well right, but not necessarily his 'normal' behavior? I haven't given any medication for his nose, just lots of fluid and we have stayed home pretty much the last 2 weeks. So my question is am I missing something, this isn't a sign of something else being wrong and I should take him in?

He's preschool teacher told me as well yesterday--"he was just really 'busy' today"! He isn't sleeping well at night even, with the humidifier and mattress reclined, is this a sign of being overtired? He's a little bit more emotional, but I expect that when sick!! slightly confused that's all? I hate when things come on Friday like this...No fever or anything obvious like that just a nasty thick green nasal discharge and apparently feeling way better than myself?

What can I do next?

Hi Luvmyboyz,

You are a great mom for caring so much. i have a 3 year old that gets frequent colds. Our pedi said that I should always take him outside for fresh air, if he is up to it...and to even let him play a bit in the park (if he has no fever or a very low fever..) She said that for colds and low fevers, children may still need air and some play....it improves their moods and thus boosts their immune system...

So...it could be perhaps that your little one needs a little more air and some lite exercise to actually help him get over the cold.

at the end of the day however, you know your little one best, so do what your gut tells you.

best, jilly

Sounds to me like he's just bored of staying home so much! ;) I would say that if he's active, has no fever and isn't complaining, go out and do something! If he's still hacking then maybe don't go to a play area where he can infect others, but a park, go on a walk, even go to Target or the mall and look at toys. He may not be sleeping well b/c he's not getting enough exercise. I know you don't want him to get more sick or get others sick, but just keep washing hands, take tissue and get rolling! ;)

If he's not sleeping well his behavior could be a result of that. I know when my daughter doesn't get enough rest she ends up bouncing off the walls and she gets very, very wild.

All I know is, when my son is OVER-tired or tired... he actually gets MORE HYPER... and more boisterous.
It is... simply the child trying to FORCE themselves, awake.
I know my son, he is tired and will nap still, when like that.

Your son is sick... he needs rest.
Make EVERYTHING quiet, dark, turned off and boring.
Verbally cue him, after a good lunch, tell him it is rest time. Don't do any horse-play. It will just key him up, more.

What time does he go to bed at night?
Have a regular sleep time and nap time.
Every night, the same routine.
It takes me, 1 hour PRIOR to actual bed/nap time, to get my kids, wound down. You need to get kids to Wind-Down.... first.

Did you give him any medicine? Some kids have atypical reactions. My mom still tells the story of me aroung age 2 after my first does of cough syrup. She says I had been sluggish and napping on the couch for 2 days, but after I had the medicine, which had a side-effect of drowsiness, I apparently started crawling in circles around the house shrieking :)

Other than that I dont' kow, maybe he just feels better. My kids stay pretty active unless they have a fever.
