Newborn Baby Question

Hi.
I have a one week old little girl and she sleeps all day and night. Now, I have a five year old son and he never slept, even as an infant. Is this normal? She has a few periods of being awake (maybe total an hour or two in 24 hours), yet they are short and she seems very content just to snooze away. She will wake up during a diaper change or if she is hungry. Any thoughts? I am a nervous wreck!

What can I do next?

My son slept ALL the time, at one week!! He would generally only wake for a feeding, or a dirty diaper. He was so content to sleep. If she is waking and alerting you to eat, no biggie. My son has always been a wonderful sleeper. The most he ever woke up at night was twice and that was rare. All kinds of people were telling me I must wake him up at night to feed. My Dr. said, that as long as he was gaining weight...never wake a sleeping baby. I hope you have a great sleeper, too! Congrats!

You sound like me. I had one that NEVER slept and the next one (13 months later) slept continuously. My pediatrician laughed when I told
him I was concerned (we had a great relationship). He said enjoy it!
So normal to me. Some babies sleep more. To this day he will sleep
wherever and whenever he is tired.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT compare your children. Every child is different and do different things. You will drive yourself crazy comparing. This is very normal and enjoy the time she is asleep.

Hahaha, I laugh because I went through the same exact thing. Our first was a sick baby from the time he was born, so he never slept well in the beginning. Our second slept ALL THE TIME, and when he wasn't sleeping, he was perfectly content just sitting there. At our 2 week and 1 month appts I kept asking "Is there something wrong with him, all he does is sleep?". The drs reassured me that he was perfectly normal and that I should count my blessings!

Congrats on having such a great sleeper!

Both my kids were like this, totally normal!! I'm sad for you that your first never slept, this will be better! ;) It took a couple of months for my kids to start to wake up, but around 2-3 months they were more awake and ready to play. Also, be ready for her to wake up a bit more in the next couple of weeks, but it will all be in the middle of the night! Ugh. I hated when they had days and nights mixed, but there's really not much you can do about it except wait it out. As you probably have already tried, waking her up is total joke, so when people suggest you wake her up more during the day so she sleeps at night just say okay and move on cuz it probably won't happen!
Congrats on a little girl!!!

As long as she's eating when she does wake up it's normal. My second son was like that, he slept for about the first 2 weeks. I thought that was pretty sweet of him to give me that recovery time ;)

Newborns are typically only awake 3-4 short periods, like 20 minutes of wakefulness in addition to waking up wanting to eat or have a diaper change. It is VERY normal. They sleep like 18-20 hours a day, eat and poop the rest of it and are wakeful a very short glimpse at first.

I'm sure your 5 year old did it too, but it doesn't last long by 1 month they will have a LOT more wakeful time, so when you think of them as a "baby" it won't be this sleeping 1 week old. I have a 3 week old and he's already awake a LOT more.. just happy to stare at my face.

Congrats on your newborn!

enjoy it while it lasts!! My daughter was that way for the first 2 weeks, only up 2 hours at the most, now she is 8 weeks and hardly sleeps! I was worried too but it slowly became less and less as she got older.

Chiming in - mine were also sleepers. My daughter was such a sleeper at the beginning that we had to get her naked and put cold washcloths on her for her to stay awake long enough to eat. No worries though, in a couple of weeks she could make it through a feeding, and a couple of weeks after that she was much more alert. I think that some kids are just born a little worn out!

She sounds like a dream! Honestly, they are all different. As long as she is waking to eat your are fine. Trust me, she will have longer wake periods as she gets older. Enjoy it while you can!
