Name of Sleep Training Technique?

Does anyone know the name of the sleep training technique where you place the child in the crib and sit outside of it until they fall asleep? Every few days you move away gradually, and theoretically they fall asleep after shorter and shorter intervals, and eventually without you around anymore. I'm trying to get more info on this method to potentially use with my son. I tried Ferber's method, but he gets too upset and won't be calmed down; he does fine if I stay by him though. Is there a name for this, and any experiences to share? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I didn't really use any of these methods so I can't be of much help as far as sharing experiences. I do know that it depends on what age your child is. Also, if he is getting too upset now is a great time to also teach him 'self-soothing' at the same time (depends on his age. Again - I didn't do any of these, but that worked for us, not everyone. We co-slept until about 2 and then I taught her to help put her bear to sleep by patting her bears back and gently closing her own eyes.

I found the following on the family sleep clinic website -
http://www.bounty.com/baby/care/family-sleep-clinic
The moving game:
This is an alternative way of teaching your baby to fall asleep alone. It will take longer than the sleep training method described above, but may involve fewer tears all round.

*Sit by your baby’s cot and hold her hand until she learns how to fall asleep this way. It may take a few nights, but then let your baby fall asleep in this way for a few nights.
*Move your chair a little further away from the cot, and stay there until your baby falls asleep.
*Gradually keep moving your chair a little further away each night. You will find yourself sitting outside the door eventually, but in a place where your baby can still see you.
*Stay outside the door, but in a place where you can still talk to your baby and give her reassurance for a few nights.
*You will a reach a point where your baby will fall asleep without you being nearby. It will work, even though it may take a few weeks!

I also found it referred to as the 'chair method' http://www.babysleepsite.com/tag/chair-method/

Good Luck - the sleep stuff is HARD!

Sounds like the "Sleep Lady Shuffle". I can't remember the name of the book, but we used this technique. I'm sure if you google it, her name would come up.

sounds similar to elizabeth pantley's "no cry sleep solution"

i used some of her ideas and it helped. it did take time- moving away was a pretty slow process but we did get there.
good luck!

This was one of the methods in "no cry sleep solution" - didn't work for us, he was still standing in his crib crying/screaming multiple times a night after three weeks! i just kept him on a bed right next to ours until he asked to move to his room.

Sounds like the "No Cry Sleep Solution".
It didn't work for us...but the "Sleepeasy Solution did work...though it did involve a little bit of crying (2 nights...14 min the first night, 4 min the second night). By night 3, he was reaching for his crib and to this day is happy to go to sleep. My son was 10 months or so when we tried it.
Good luck!
