My nine month old has been crawling for a few weeks now and his knees are rough and dark. I have started putting some of my long socks on him when he crawls on the carpet to help but I am hoping his knees will get better. Do you have any remedies for this, lotions etc? Or will this just go away? We live in Vegas so it's hot already and he is always wearing shorts...our carpet his very rough.

Thanks

The best stuff for rough dark knees from crawling is bag balm. It comes in a green square tin. It is used on the bags of cows to keep them moist. I use it all the time. I work with handicap people and some only ever crawl. We use this stuff on their knees daily and it is wonderful. You can buy it at Walmart, pet stores, feed stores...

This is normal however I always rubbed on pure shea butter and it really helped. Keeps those knees moist and does help with that dark appearance. You can get pure shea butter at any health food store.

You can use the socks if you want. And use lots of moisturizers after baths, etc.. But really... it will go away after he starts walking. My kids were "early" walkers so theirs went away pretty quickly. Maybe your son will be too.

I agree she needs pants to crawl on and lots of cream, hand cream, vasoline etc. Watch her elbos and other places on the body for rough patches though. Sometimes it's not really the crawling but signs of a general dry skin condition or food sensitivity etc.

I would spread a soft cushy comforter or an opened up padded sleeping bag on the floor for him to crawl on. The only way I could get my son's knees clean at that age was to put baby wash or bubble bath in the bathwater and let him play long enough for them to soak. Baby oil works well too. It can be used like bath oil.

That toughened skin is forming to protect his knees while he crawls. It's completely normal. If it seems irritated or starts to crack, you can put lotion or Lansinoh on it after baths, but it probably won't really need those unless he's REALLY tearing up the floor!

The callouses will go away when he starts walking and doesn't need to get around on his knees.

We currently live in Central America so I know how you feel about the heat. We keep our house pretty cold so while we were in the house I would keep her in pants to help cushion her knees a bit. When we went outside I would just change her into shorts. The bruising of the knees will get better it's just going to take some time.
