Keeping Baby's Hand Warm at Night

Our house gets pretty chilly at night so I have been dressing my 5 mo old in jammies & then one of those sleep sacks. His hands always are so cold though. Any ideas on how to keep them warm? I thought maybe socks on his hands, but I'm afraid he'll choke since everything goes in his mouth these days. Or am I just paranoid since I'm a first time mommy? I wish all the jammies had the built in fold over mittens like they have in newborn sizes.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice! I will not worry so much about his hands now. Thanks!

I have also heard that baby's hands and feet are always cold. You don't need to put anything on his hands especially because it sounds like he's pretty bundled up already.

Carter's has sleepers with the mits attached for larger sizes. I had one that was for 9 months. I think I got it at Babies R Us.

I use the Kiddopotamus microfleece swaddle (Large is up to 22 lbs.) The flaps keep my daughters arms pinned to her body so they stay warm. She can wiggle her arms around in there but not enough to escape, the velcro is pretty strong. Babies R' Us sells them in either cotton or microfleece.

If you concerned about choking you could always sew the sock or a mitton on to the sleeper. It may ease your mind.

M., I was just wondering how cold your house is really getting at night? The one word of advice your peds dr would even give you as Iam is dont dress your son any warmer then you would dress yourself. He could get overheated in the night. Jammies and the sleeping sack seems alot unless your house is getting under I would say 55 degress or more at night and if that is the case then I would be turning on the heat. As far as his hands then socks or mittens would be fine. The most he could do is just take them off. Good luck to you.

I put socks on my dd hands and have had no problem w/choking. It was great when the clothes hd the fold over flaps.
My hubby is more concerned about cold hands.

I was told that it's ok if their hands feel a little cold..that little ones bodies regulate a lot different and that they are just fine with cold hands...I never had anything on my kids hands...just a sleepsack ontop of jammies..no blankets ever (DS is 2 1/2 and still loves his "night night sack"-his is on backwards though to keep him from taking it off and peeing in the crib!)

M., I have been struggling with this myself as well! Our 3 month old has been waking up a lot more at night, and his little hands and feet are like ice cubes! Trust me, I felt awful! I have been told that as long as their core is warm, they will be ok. I have also heard that it is normal and they will eventually grow out of it. In the meantime, make sure to check his chest and the back of his neck for his body temp. I have been told that their room should be at about 70 degrees-we just bought a thermometer to keep in his room, it was only 10 bucks at Target. We put him in a fleece sleep sac, plus a swaddling blanket around his legs. He seems to be doing a lot better, and eventually we are just going to turn the heat on. Good luck and hope you little one stays warm!

You can try sox or mittens but even those get wet when the little one is sucking on everything..that's why the hands are so cold, they're wet. Does baby use a pacifier? That, velcroed to the jammies might help.

M. I wouldn't worry about their hands getting cold too much. It doesn't mean your infant is cold. As long as their bodies are warm (bellies), then they are fine. My twins were the same way last year. Their little hands were always a bit chilly. I used the sleep sacks at night too. They are awesome & keep them nice & toasty... Enjoy motherhood.
