My 18 month old is sick with a cold/slight fever. He was sick once before at 6 months and was just happy in my arms. (yes i am a first time mom) This time he is miserable and hates everything. So my questions is what the heck should I do with him all day? I usually don't let him watch more than one 30 min eductaion video but I have been letting him watch more. But even with more tv time he is still miserable for hours. Any ideas would be great. Thanks moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. It is not teeth. Among other things you can see it in his eyes. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I love that the "rules" don't apply and I will get a vaporizer and humidifier.

Warm baths.....

Tylenol or Motrin for the fever....

Lots of liquids....

Take car rides if he has a hard time napping....

When my 18 month old is sick, I do just about anything I can to make him better..this includes letting him have his binky more often than just bedtime.

AND, sleep when he sleeps if he's still grouchy during the day. It'll help you get a breather too!

When my guy was sick at that age, he was miserable too! As an infant, they aren't mobile or verbal... now it's a whole new ball game!

-We did a lot of quiet play time
- movies/cartoons
- popsicles (in the bathtub)
-warm baths
- motrin/tylenol
- laying on our bed reading books
-just rubbing his back when he was crying- up on the shoulder walking and rubbing until he would fall asleep and then we'd lay down together. He was much happier on my belly than in his crib and that's really all he wanted.

I am a firm believer that "the rules" don't apply when you're sick so if he takes 3 baths and eats a box of popsicles this week no biggie.

All I would add to McMama's list is a vaporizer.

It will get better soon, then...get a long nap for Mommy!

Motrin for fever, and I'd go to the Dr. Might be an ear infection - which makes us miserable - or teeth... same : ). Humidifier at night as well.. Good luck!

Could teething be the culprit? If he's in pain that would explain why he isn't satisified just being held. Teething can cause fever and be mistaken for a cold.

Lots of TLC, vaporizer/humidifier, tylenol for pain/fever, check as they mentioned for teething and if so do baby oragel and cold things to suck on, likle frozen strawberries or bananas in those mesh bags for teething babies, and lastly, if he is very congested with a lot of mucus, even though it won't be fun for either of you, put in saline drops like Little Noses and suck them out, as many times per day as needed, and especiallly before meals and naps; they feel much better when they can breathe! If he's still having fevers or continues to be very irritable, then it would be best to have his pediatrician check him to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection...good luck, and hope he feels better soon!
