Help with My Dogs' Behavior Change

My dog has recently started to act differently. She is usually very happy to see us and would do anything to keep our attention. She used to be afraid of going under or behind anything furniture wise, but now she is hiding behind my husbands chair. She now likes to stare at the wall as if there is something there.

What can I do next?

Maybe she hears something in the wall, like insects or mice. Dogs have really acute hearing and smell. How old a dog is she? Is she doing anything else wierd? Is she actually hiding from you? Does she act afraid? There's always a reason for a change, so don't give up . Good luck.

I would have a vet check her out. Maybe she is in pain and it is showing as fear. Or think back-- has anything changed in your household when this started showing up. I have to be very tuned in to my dog. If I have a voicemail on my cell phone and it is beeping she runs down the basement to hide. Now she associates the ringtone with the voicemail beep and if I don't answer my phone she hides. Also, storms, fireworks, kids loud toys, strange smells, etc. could set dogs off. Try to just observe her for a while and notice when she seems calm and relaxed vs showing this fearful side of her and you might solve the mystery. If you can't, please get her checked out by a vet that you feel good about. Good luck!

Have you been to the vet? That would be my first plan of action. It's very hard for any of us to diagnose her problem through this forum and with the limited information you gave us. There could be a number of things wrong depending on her age and breed. I hope she isn't suffering in some way. Only a physical exam will help.

Take her to the vet for a full check-up. Weird behavior that shows up all of a sudden can signal things like a brain tumor. Just a thought...I hope it's not serious, but better to know than not know. Good luck!

Is she elderly? There is a condition that occurs in some geriatric dogs called cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) that can cause that type of behavior. It is a bit like alzheimers. I had a dog that had CDS for the last 3 years of his life. It started with him wandering aimlessly through the house and getting stuck behind furniture. He stared at walls and couldn't remember how to go up and down stairs. As time went on he no longer recognized me or anybody else in the family. He was afraid of us and if anybody touched him he would flinch and scuttle away. He spent most of his days pacing around in circles.

Most dogs with CDS will at some point lose their housebreaking skills and many bark or howl incessantly. (Mine didn't, fortunately.)

Sounds like a visit to the vet would be a good first step in pinning down what is going on. Best of luck to you and your dog. I hope it is something minor and she is back to her old self soon.
