Gassy Breastfed Baby

My little guy is four months old and has some days where he toots a lot. Sometimes I can look back and see that I've had more dairy or fried foods, but sometimes I think I've been really "good" and can't see that I've eaten anything that should bother him. So, my question is actually for moms who have formula fed babies. Do you notice days that your babies are gassier than others even when you haven't changed formulas? I would like to be able to start adding food back to my diet, but it seems like I am taking more out. I guess I just want to know if there are other reasons for a baby to have gas besides what they ate. Any ideas ladies?

What can I do next?

Somedays are just diff. Think about your own system as well. It's not what you eat, don't worry about it, just eat what you want and breastfeed. Most gets filtered out anyway.

When I was nursing I had to stay away from tomato based foods because they made my son gassy. I then remembered when I was pregnant with him anytime I ate Italian food or pizza, he would just roll from side to side in my stomach. It was probably gas then.

My son was about 2 before he could eat tomato based foods without having gas troubles. Even today at 8, he still sometimes have gas issues after.

Yes.
I have both BF and bottle fed my babies. I have three.
Even if you are BF if your baby doesn't latch on to the breast correctly, they can still be gassy and toot a lot!
When I bottle fed my baby, if they didn't latch on to nipple correctly, they would be very gassy for that day. Babies can have upset stomachs too, just like we do. Not every day will be pleasant with babies.

Good luck.

I heard of this recently and it really works. Lay the baby or yourself if your gassy, lay down on the left side. bring the knees up as close to the chest as possible. within a short period of time the gas will be expelled. It works because it causes the systems to move the gas when laying like this. Wish I had known this years ago when my kids were babies and they had gas or colic.Best of luck!

Ditto with Busymom - it could be a latch issue. My DD had lots of gas and I thought it was a food issue but I noticed if I fed her lying down - she had less gas issues. If she was gassy I would give her some mylicon and rub her belly to help push the gas out. If you rub the belly, make sure to rub clockwise (right to left - his right to left) so you don't make him constipated =)

Hi,
I work with folks with food and other sensitivities. There is often no rhyme or reason to the things that people are sensitive to. When my daughter was an infant with GI problems the Dr. tested me for food allergies and then eliminated my sensitivities from my diet plus the common ones. Now, there is more accurate testing as well as holistic methods to clear the sensitivities. I would be happy to provide you with resources if you like.
Blessings,
K.

I read on this site to try a Gas X pill with my meals, especially if they were heavy in gas producing food. Call your dr to see if they have any problem with it but mine said it had the same ingredients as Mylecon and that it was okay. It really seemed to help in the early months and at some point my diet didn't bother my baby. Also try doing "bicycle legs" on your baby to expel the gas bubbles. Breastfed to 1 year of age. Good luck and keep trying to find solutions!
