Food for Sick Child with Coxsackie Virus

My three year old has quite a few painful mouth sores thanks to the Coxsackie virus. He is wanting to eat, but most foods are causing him a lot of pain. I feel so bad- he says he is hungry so I make him something and when he takes a bite he starts crying and telling me it hurts. The only thing I can get him to eat is yogurt and a few bites of fruit. I tried eggs and oatmeal with no luck. He will drink juice, milk and water so I am not worried about him dehydrating, just worried about him being hungry and not able to eat. If any one has gone through this let me know what you fed your kids please!!!

What can I do next?

jello, pudding, cool cream based soups, icepops are great for the fluid too. It might not be an extreemly healthy balanced meal for now but just keeping him hydrated and not hungry is key until he heals up.

I get mouth ulcers often and the things that do not irritate my mouth during those times are cold milk and tea. Food is just hard. I don't know if soups are a good idea b/c they usually have lots of sodium in them and that will burn. I don't know anything about the Coxsackie virus and what kind of mouth sores it produces, but when I was little and would get mouth sores, my mom would mix benedryl and I THINK Maylox for me to coat my mouth with before eating. it wouldn't burn (I'm a big baby) and I would just swish it around my mouth and spit it out and that would allow me to eat a small bit. Also, holding warm tea bags on the sores help as well. I hope your little guy gets better soon!!

poor baby :( my son didn't eat solid food for almost two weeks, with hand/foot/mouth disease. get him some pediasure shakes. they're AWESOME and my ped. said if he had to he could live off them - and he did. they are all the vits/mins he needs, just make sure he drinks lots of water because they will make him constipated. hope he feels better soon :( oh and you can get that cepacol (sore throat spray) and it helps a bit, because it numbs the throat, just long enough to eat usually. GOOD LUCK. my heart breaks for your little guy, our experience was awful.

How about bananas or noodles with just butter on them. He could just slurp them and not have to chew.

Don't worry about him not eating in less he is complaining of hunger. My son had it. The worst. I got it too but just for a day major flu like symptoms. Make sure he is hydrated and keep everyones hands clean. He'll be over it in a couple days. Good luck

have you tries pedisure? take one or two of the bottles blend with ice to make a milk shake. that will be a good way to get cal and nutri into system and it will be super cold and not salty. you can do the same with yogurt. stay away from the sugary kinds, that too can be irrating. gl

Here are a few things that worked for us:

cold applesauce
Fruit smoothies (I put vanilla Silk soy milk, frozen bananas and frozen berries, vanilla soy protein powder, and a splash of apple or grape juice, then whip it up in the blender).
Instant oatmeal, cooled down to lukewarm
Jello
Ice cream
Popsicles

Don't worry, he'll be fine, it's just a few days then passes!!

My son had that dreadful virus too when he was younger. I felt so bad for him. The only thing that helped was apple sauce. We kept him hydrated but the only thing he would swallow food-wise was the apple sauce.

Sorry to hear your little one is going through this. :(

What about smoothies ? Those are usually a little thicker but easy on the mouth.

When my son had it at the same age he ate a lot of ice cream and sorbet. You can make milkshakes or smoothies. It may sound silly but you might want to try baby food. I buy the bananas in the plastic container which are creamy like pudding. I wouldn't worry too much about solid food at this point and just continue the fluids. I have also heard about the banadryl malox rinse but check with your doc about it.

I HATE HATE HATE this sickness! I felt SO helpless when my daughter had this when she was 2. I remember trying just about anything. I've never been one to give sugar to my girl, but i totally got pudding pops for her cuz I figured the milk base would be soothing. I gave her pedialite popsicles but she wouldn't go near them. We tried pudding, yougert, cottage cheese, applesause, basically everything mushy. She drank milk, but with all of these she cried as she ate/drank all of it. :( She also co-slept with me (she's been in her room, not ours, since she was a baby) for that week because she woke up 4-5 times a night crying in pain. :( I feel for you! I hope it goes away fast for your little guy!

Cold Pediasure is a good idea. You might try frozen yogurt, ice cream and popsicles, too. The cold might help numb the sores and make a few bites of other food possible. But sugar can be irritating – I notice it burns my mouth and throat.

If he's able to eat yogurt and fruit, he'll probably be okay. Skinnier, but fine. My grandson had a miserable bout of this several months back. Poor little guy lost some weight. We had to tell him inspirational stories about how superheroes and people who play sports get hurt, but go on to do what they need to do in spite of the pain. It seemed to help. Sometimes.

Hope your son feels better soon.
