Fine Motor Development

My ds, at 7 months old, shows little to no interest in toys. He rarely reaches out for objects other than my hands. He loves playing with my hands and face, though. He's a little slow, but mostly on track for hos gross motor milestones- very close to sitting up on his own, pushing up on his hands and knees- but I'm starting to get really worried about his lack of interest in manipulating things with his hands. Anyone else have a similar experience? What happened? At the last well child visit, the ped said if he didn't pick up in that area by 9 months, he'd have to go to pediatric occupational therapy.

What can I do next?

A.,
Don't underestimate the benefits of crawling and tummy time for developing hand & finger strength.
My son (after preschool, 4) had some OT for fine motor. If your son is advised to get it--definitely take advantage of it. It will help him!

2 months for a 7 month old is like 10 years for us. He is doing just fine. He will do just fine in time, but you do need to encourage him. My daughter at 7 months was sitting up and that is about it. She is a daycare kid so I am sure I didnt notice alot since I dont see her and she probably "learned' by watching the other kids. Boys are also heavier than girls and tend to take longer so since my DD was 7 months old and sitter means that she probaby did it because she was could support her own weight.
With your boy, please do not worry about him. Each person develops milestone at their own time. I am sure he will be just fine. Make sure you pray for him :)
Good luck!!!

I've said it a thousand times and I'm saying again,"A mother that loves their child knows her child better than any Dr. could."who sees them for 15 min. once a week, month or year.
What do you see in your child? Is your son behind?Be kind to him by allowing him to be uniquely imperfect,he is divinely his own person, beautiful in every way, yes? If your son will need "glasses as mine did A. 3 yrs old,he will grasp objects late, but will eat, lift and speak just fine.Does he respond with coo's and babbles?Check the Gerber website if you can ,they have a great "grow-list" for any age if you need a comparison for cognitive behavior, physical growth, ect. It might be helpful. Most of all,RELAX Mommy,we are all created individually unique. :)

I don't actually know much about how those early months go, but I will tell you that my son sat in the W-Sit as early as I can remember him sitting on his own. This directly impacted his fine motor skills. (The W-Sit is when the knees are forward and the feet are back, butt sitting on the ground.) Watch for this early, as he sits on his own, pulls himself up and plops back down. Feet should be forward.

Early Intervention is a wonderful thing. It never hurts to have him assessed. You will get a lot of tips, even if he doesn't qualify for services.

Good luck!

Hi A.,

Every child grows at his/her own pace, keep observing and keep giving him opportunities to touch and feel textures like child safe blocks, keys, and other such toys.

Not sure what you mean by "he's a little slow", please do get a second/third opinion from a doctor. Early intervention is a good idea.

Do you have a HMG Service Coordinator or a Developmental Specialist these would be great people to have working with you to give you the resources you need to have your child tested.
