Dishwasher Died

So I started the dishwasher this afternoon and...nothing happened. It's been on it's last leg for awhile and is pretty old so this wasn't a big surprise. Looks like we'll be appliance shopping soon. Any suggestions on brands that you love or what to avoid? Our (it's a Kenmore) came with the house, so we've never bought one before.

What can I do next?

Whatever you get, get the extended or service warranty. Somewhere there's graveyard full of my old dishwashers from the last 10 years. They just don't make things like that used to- no matter how much money you spend on it.

I heard that you should buy American made because if you get one made in another country, either you can't find parts or the parts are very expensive. Kitchen aid is good

I've only ever owned 2. One was a Kenmore and my current one is a Bosch. They are so very different, that you really can't even compare them. Besides, they were produced almost a decade apart, so a lot different in efficiency.

But, whatever brands you decide to shop, keep an eye out for the decibal factor. Below 50 is pretty quiet. Above that, and I don't want it in my house. Not much is more annoying than needing to run the dishwasher and thinking, "I'll wait until later because it is so loud." Ugh.
This one, I run at night when I go to bed (just so I make sure to get that last glass or spoon in it) and it is on the end of the bar just past our bedroom door. No noise issues. I've opened it a few times (and so has husband) when it was running, because we didn't hear it.

In our house, if one dishwasher dies, we still have two more.

Is it throwing a code?
Free tip: reset your circuit breaker.
We thought our motor was blown ( the code indicated an issue with the motor) but a friend told me to try resetting the circuit breaker & viola! It's fine. Which us a good thing because I was having O. HECK of a time finding someone to service an LG. I love it but seriously tough to get service for--so avoid!

My sympathies.

Do you have a regular person who repairs your appliances? If you do, call that person and ask for a recommendation. He (supposing it's a man) will be able to tell you what is good quality and what brands he has to fix a lot.

It's hard to recommend a brand name, because companies get bought out by other companies with great regularity. What might have been a good brand a few years ago may be an inferior machine now but with the same "good" name on it. That's why it's a good idea to talk with someone who deals with the insides of appliances every day.

My mother-in-law just got a Miele that is amazing. It's so quiet and they cycles aren't crazy long. Super, super pricey but I'm thinking of taking a baseball hat to mine just so I can get a new one. I hate our dishwasher.

Ugh, sorry yours died. We loved our Kenmore, and I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Now we have a very basic GE, which works well. Do a little research, decide how much you want to spend, and go for it. Good luck!

Look at Consumer Reports for repair records.

Also, a friend just went to the local Sears outlet (where they have floor models, things with a scratch on the side that you will never see, and so on), and negotiated a great deal of the already lower price. They want to get rid of these things.

We have a Bosch and love it although after 20 years it may need to be replaced or at least have some gaskets replaced. We had one appliance service call in all that time - not bad!

When mine died a year ago, I insisted that my new one have a hard food grinder like my old one. I am NOT into washing my dishes before they go in the dishwasher. Unfortunately food grinders have gone by the wayside in the interest of decibel levels. I fortunately was able to order 'last year's model' that still had one. It is a Whirlpool and I am very happy with it. May it last a LONG LONG time ;-)

Other features you want to look for are the nylon racks as opposed to the vinyl coated and the tall tub.

ETA I second what MamaDuck said. Nothing lasts anymore and we're supposed to accept this as normal.

When we purchased a dishwasher about 5 years ago, Consumer Reports had Bosch listed at the very top followed by Whirlpool Gold. Now, that has been 5 years ago, so things definitely could have changed.

My parents have a Bosch and love it. It is very quiet (and yes, I have accidentally opened it a time or two, thinking it wasn't running).

We didn't have a place nearby that sold Bosch, so we went with Whirlpool Gold. I loved that dishwasher, and when we moved to our 'new' house 3 years ago, we bought another Whirlpool Gold for this house, too.

When you go buy your dishwasher, you want to pay attention to the noise level and price (obviously), but also things like where the placement of racks are. We have Corelle dishes, and I feel like our dishwasher was made for our dishes....the bowls fit perfectly in line on the top shelf in the middle. Pans fit well on the bottom with the lids on the left (there is a larger gap on the left side only that works perfectly for our wider rimmed straining lids -- Wearever brand). I like having the silverware in the door with a handy little lever that will quickly open the basket for quick clean out.

We did end up with a white interior, and it does look light pinkish orange now due to the various things that we have washed over the last 3 years (namely spaghetti sauce). I don't really care, because the dishwasher is always closed, but if this would bother you, then consider getting stainless steel on the inside.

Good luck!

I LOVE my Kitchen Aid. I have the higher end Kitchen Aid Dishwasher, Fridge and white cooktop and LOVE them all. No issues whatsoever.

AVOID......... Maytag and GE Profile. My top of the line Maytag dishwasher and fridge were dead within 4 yrs. The GE Profile came with the house and it sucked as well.

I still love Kenmore. Check out Sears Outlets around the country. Sometimes they are pretty reasonable. Maytag is also good.
